A sweet book set in the early 1900's centering around a mainline Philadelphia doctor who has started a practice in a small town, and the lovely mute mountain girl he befriends.

Yeah, but he kinds of uses her which isn't very nice considering her past. Maybe the intent was to throw a hindrance to the romance which they would have to overcome, but he comes across like a jerk.

This isn't Gaffney's best book, which means it's only really, really, really good. Terrific characterizations, evocative, nuanced writing, interesting setting, most of all, beautiful romance. I had been put off of reading it by reviews which suggested the heroine is so young and otherwordly that the romance doesn't work--not so! Although the heroine is only eighteen, she has been through a lot and she is definitely old enough to know what she wants and what her feelings are. I was completely convinced and captivated by the romance. This is a perfect recommendation for readers who don't like violent or arrogant heroes, but who do like a dark edge to stories.
