Thorne has loved Rainey since she was a child. She thinks of him as her best friend, and when she becomes infatuated with the new handsome schoolteacher, she asks him to show her how to use "feminine wiles" to attract him. After a few kissing lessons, she hardly remembers the schoolteacher, but she refuses Thorne's offer of marriage because she thinks he is offering out of duty rather than love. A secondary plot has Thorne hiring a private detective to find his long lost half sister, but this plot is never fully developed and in fact seems to interfere with the primary romance. Although he never said the exact words she wanted, Thorne expressed his feelings toward her in his actions and words; only a dimwit could have mistaken them.
