Search - Swim to Me

It was an interesting book. Great discription and good charecters kept me reading. The story, however, kinda fizzles to an anti-climatic end. I can't help but think, it could have been so much better.

This book is entertaining and has an interesting premise. A young girl is enthralled by the underwater mermaid show at a small theme park, and grows up to join them. The idea of the mermaid show is basically Seaworld, with humans donning flippers and performing themselves.

It's what I would consider to be a relaxing read. The character have vastly different and interesting experiences. There's a lot of potential for conflict (such as what might occur in a Wally Lamb or Billie Letts novel), but instead of exploring that potential, the conflict just evaporates, and everyone lives more or less happily ever after. Mildly interesting, but not earth-shattering. I was glad I read it, though I wouldn't consider it worthy of a re-read.

Good summer reading.

This coming-of-age story, set in the late 50s, has a winning heroine in Delores Walker, who leaves her conflict-filled Bronx home to become a mermaid in a Florida roadside amusement park. The character development is well-done, but the abrupt ending is not at all satisfying.
