My husband and I are planning to go to Switzerland in 2009.  We saw part of a travel channel program that told about taking a train up a mountain.  Then at the top of the mountain, you can walk through a glacier.  I have been able to find out about the train, but not about walking through the glacier.  Does anyone know about this?  Also up for other suggetions on what we should see.

We are thinking about going with a group tour.  That way we don't have to worry about anything.  Has anyone done this?

I went to this region a couple years ago. I think the Ice Palace is what you may be talking about. The glacier is accessed when you get off the train at the top.

My aunt and I did not go with a tour and found the transportation and other details very easy to understand and set up.  Switzerland was so easy to explore and get around in with a rail pass.  We stayed 'headquartered' west of Interlaken in Spiez and made daily excursions in this region and to the south west as well.   I used Baedekers Switzerland guide which had a pullout map. It is a beautiful area.  Enjoy your trip!

Yes, the Ice Palace is what I was looking for.  Thanks so much.

Maybe we will try it on our own rather than go with a tour.  So far I haven't seen any tours that offer the Ice Palace and we definately what to see it.

I have heard that the European rail is great.  My son spent 3 months in Europe going country to country with a rail pass.

I will also lok into the book you told me about.

Thanks so much.

That is on the Jungfrau mountain. I saw the same show on the travel channel (I believe it was Samantha Brown). I actually stayed in Interlaken, Switzerland last June, which is right at the base of the Jungfrau mountain range. :)
