This is a thread for those of us feeling overwhelmed by too many choices and not enough room on the floor. :-)

Would anyone like to come up with a challenge, so we have some kind of a goal?

I'm passing on five of my Lynn Kurland books and I just decided I would probably never want to read the "Forever" trilogy by Jude Deveraux. In total, I think I've passed on about 20 books in the last 2 days!  Drop in the bucket, but there are actually empty spaces in my storage bins now.

Now, if I can just stay away from the library sales....

Well if you aren't going to read it you might as well get rid of it.....I got rid of a lot of books this spring with that attitude. However I have over 1100 TBR, and I do want to read most of them.....that in itself is quite a challenge.

Willa I read the first Forever book but decided not to read the others, as they take away the HEA in the first book...so why bother?

I am right there with you Willa.  Have you read Under the Tuscan Sun?  I read it about a year or so ago and it did help me get a little perspective on my book addiction.  It wasn't long after that I found out about a different trading site and joined up thinking I would be able to give some of my books to new homes.  Well - I have done that - but I have ended up bringing in probably more than I have sent out!!!!!  LOL

My New Year's Resolution IS going to be to catalog and organize all my books, figure out exactly how big my TBR is now, TRY to stay out of games that require me to make new purchases of books (gotta have my "unconventional" erotics though), REDUCE my TBR by 25 percent, only request or purchase or trade for WL books - unless it is to fill in a series, and once my SIL gets a job and finances ease up to continue to list and ship out as many of my "stash" as I can bear to let go of.

My weakness is Half Price Books.....gotta love a store where I can get sometimes 5 or 6 books for $20.  I sometimes find erotics there for either $3 or $1.  If I could just limit myself to those......

I'd heard that, Anne, which is one of the reasons I decided to not even bother with the series. I like my HEA, damn it! :-)

I haven't read UTTS, but I will have to look for it. AT THE LIBRARY! :-)  I'm really annoyed with myself with letting this happen, because I used to be such a pack rat, and I did a lot of reading and soul-searching and got really good at decluttering. And now I'm in the same mess again, just with book!

I think my long-range goal will be to reduce the four storage areas I currrently have for my TBR to just three.  Now I need a short-range goal to help me get there.

I need help too! I've actually started posting wishlist stuff LOL but I have to admit parting with maybe 10 books when I have thousands isnt' making much of a dent! I love books though and I'm getting there!

I like to play in the game swaps too but I made a rule for myself--I've gotta pull the book out of my TBR pile for the swap, no purchasing a new book to use.  If I don't have something on my shelf or in the TBR pile that fits the swap, I don't play.

I do try and go thru my TBR piles every couple of months and cull it down to what I really want to read and get rid of the rest.

Recently I went through my TBR pile and posted quite a few.  Now my goal is to not order any more (unless its WL'd) and read my "inventory" until its gone, then start over fresh.    I'm down to about 35 in the TBR pile

Sherri that's supposed to be my goal too.....with all the books here I don't need any more, right?  Right....so I ordered 3 from half.com today.....I've just gotta read those Sarah McCarty books that are being talked about! But I am trying to use will power and not get more.....except for WL books of course LOL

I have mine TBR almost down to 50 books...now I am trying to play only swaps that don't require me to buy a book, like Cindy said.  It's so hard too!! I love books!!  I did mail out 15 books this week which exceeded my postage budget but I needed to make room!!

i pretty much do the same thing with swaps - only join if i already have a book i can use.

i have 222 on my TBR list here on PBS, but that doesn't include any of the library books, or quite a few of the books i had before i joined PBS, and sometimes i still forget to add a book on my list here when i get it from elsewhere.

i always go through my TBR pile at the beginning of the year, and this year i'm going to have to be a bit more ruthless about weeding books that have been here unread for years.  i joined here this year, and i've probably got over 100 more books in TBR than i did at this time last year.  i've sent out more books than i've received from here, but i guess now i guess i'm just getting books faster than i can read them!

I'm going to try to make it a New Year's resolution not to order more than one book by an author when I'm first trying them out.  It seems like I'm always doing with with two or more books.  I collected everything Sabrina Jeffries ever wrote before I even read the first one:P  I think I had all but 4 or 5 of Jo Goodman's books before I read one of them.  The list goes on...  It's bad enough when you get even two or three books and lose interest after the first one.

This is why I"ve put a hold on joining any new games and joined some virtual boxes instead.  For the games I usually end up buying a book to fit the theme. Not always but but frequently.  I've also been ending up with books from games that I really have not interest in as well. But with the VBS, I've been reading more from MT TBR and I only take out what I want.

I've also started filling in some series gaps with books from the library. I had a couple series that were WL and I was missing some books.  I put myself on hold at the library and got them from there before they came up on my WL. So I was able to read the books I had and post them.

I've also gotten some of the WL books that I have from the library so I just post mine and send them out.  I have 3 over flowing bookcases and a husband grumping about my books.

I've been using the library more lately which is good because I'm not keeping/requesting/buying as many books; however, the down side to this is that my TBR pile isn't really going anywhere because I'm reading the library books and not what I already have here. I took quite a few to the UBS this week and every so often I go through my TBR to weed out the ones I don't think I'll read. My goal is to get my pile under control before the next big library sale--I think it's in Feb.--and not to go crazy at said sale and get books I don't really want/need.

I just read my first Kurland book (With Every Breath) and removed 12 of her books from my reminder list.  I know not the same as TBR but maybe now they won't become TBR books.  Actually I didn't finish With Every Breath. I should have known not to get it as time travels aren't my thing.  But I had put the whole series on my RL.  I might still read some of her non-time travel books though at some point.

Well - even though there is a library just about 1/2 mile from my house - I never go there.  I live just outside the city limits, even though you really can't tell where the city limits are.  Because of that, I have to pay a "membership" fee if I use the library.  We did it when my DD was in HS, but haven't bothered since then.  I have always been a "keeper" and not a "releaser" of my books.  I would always loan them to friends or co-workers, but ALWAYS wanted them back.  I have NEVER taken a book to sell to my UBS, but I am finding it easier to let go of my books as I get to know the people on the site.  It makes me feel better knowing that my books are going to people just as addicted as I am!

I've been doing the exact same thing ("cleaning") and I still look at a mountain of books with no real "home" except stacked on my desk and floor. I'm in the process of rearranging and moving stuff out of my "scrapbook" room since a) I don't scrapbook any more so why do I need a room for all my scrapping junk (??) and b) I needed more places to put my shelves because I will never stop reading! :)

Recently I decided to clear out all my Carpathian book by Feehan. I'd read several and just decided I probably would never read any more. I had one person come through and order most of them as soon as I posted them. Ditto with Laurie King. I just decided I probably wouldn't read any of her stuff. I cleared out some misc. "singles" books that either weren't part of a series or I only had one of. That helped and I can tell a difference but to everyone else I haven't made a dent. lol

I've tried to stay away but considering I volunteer at my rather large FOL with a huge amount of daily donations I'd have to quit before I stopped bringing books home. lol I can just see that conversation:

"Uh, S-----, I have to temporarily quit until I get my Mt. TBR pile down to a reasonable amount. I have no willpower so simply not bringing home books after my shift is not an option. I hope you understand."  Yeah, right. lol

So, I'm all up for some kind of challenge that will either help me read faster, donate faster or stop bringing home books.

(BTW, today after my shift I brought home "Tribute" by Nora Roberts, "Simmer Down" by the Conants, "Kissing Christmas Good-bye" by M.C. Beaton and Obsession by Jonathon Kellerman.  I also got "Tall, Dark and Kilted" by Allie Mackay from PBS. *sigh*)

Kim I've done that a lot too since I joined PBS this spring. As a result I have too many books, really! I am not going to do that any more. I am going to read more!

Last night I took some books off my PBS TBR so there is mostly romance and its still over 1000 books. That's a lot of reading...

I am guilty of collecting all or most of a series before I read them too.  I have the first 5 or 6 of the Black Daggar Brotherhood series here.  I have had them since May (I think!).  Haven't had time to read any of them yet.  I get really frustrated when I read one of a series, find I REALLY love it, and then have to wait and wait to get the others.

That happened with Twilight.  I got the first one from another site early last year.  I read it soon after I got it cuz at the time I was just starting swapping and didn't have a humungous TBR yet.  I managed to get Eclipse and Breaking Dawn quite a while before I got New Dawn.  Now I want to go back, reread Twilight and then read all 4 straight through.  I am in a bookring group on the other site I am in, so my TBR is constant!  I have 3 bookring books staring at me now and 3 more on the way.  That doesn't include books to read for games here AND there, and swaps on the side with members of either site.  It will be next year sometime before I get to read all of the Twilight books.

OK - in addition to a book addiction, I readily admit to an addiction to the games......Boy - I've got it bad......

I think I will get my DD to make me a LARGE sign to post above the computer with my New Year's Resolutions.  Karid and I are working on the wording of an additional one.  Something in the area of NOT paying $ for ANY new or used books unless we have read XXX number of books from our TBR piles.  If we do - then we have to buy a WL book for the other person.  Since she lives only a couple of miles away from me, we should be able to keep each other on track.  At least, that is the way we PLAN for it to work.

I have about 160 books in my TBR and have decided that my 2009 Reading Challenge is to read 75% of those books that are in my TBR as of 12/31. I feel very panicy (is that a word?) when I think about all the books I have to read and all the ones coming in to me from swaps, plus the new ones that will come up on my WL when they are published. I went through a lot of my erotica and pulled out the ones I know I will never read and sent those on to friends or the fifo. I sorted my wl out and eliminated all the ones I put on there just because I thought I might like them but realize it will just add to the tbr and I probably won't get to them. I also took off any books that have been on there for quite a while and I am like #12 and the wl is just not moving at all.It would take me years to finally get the book. My wl is down to about 165, so I am not sure I really made any kind of a dent but...lol. I seriously cut down on swaps because I was finding that I would win a book that I'll never read. So now I am just joining ones I think I'll get a book I'll like and not join ones just  because I have a book that fits the swap requirements.

Mary, that was whyI got rid of my Kurland's too--just do not get into time travel, I don't know why. I should probably dig out the other time travel books that are still lurking.

I wish I could get to the library and actually get all the books I deselected (librarian term) out of the house already!  I hate that stage where you're decuttering and all the stuff you've decluttered is STILL THERE cluttering up the place even more!

"We all have jobs. I build my roller coasters, dad works on his computer, and mom does her book-swapping." -- my son

Willa - I love this quote in your siggy - how old is your son?

Yeah - it seems like the only way to get it organized is to make a mess first!  LOL  I'm finding that hard to do, cuz my DD, SIL, and 2 grandsons live with me now.  The little one is just 2 - so I can't leave the books in piles where he can reach them.  He LOVES to "read" - for him that means grabbing one of Grandma's books and pulling on the cover, pages, etc.  I thought about just giving him an older unpostable book to do what he wants with - but I kinda figure it is sort of like training a dog.  Don't give them any chew toy that resembles something you don't want them to chew!  OF COURSE he has his own books - and we read to him from them every day - but somehow they just aren't the same as my books.  LOL

I do good with not ordering any books but the homepage of PBS gets me every time!  The ability to scroll thru recently posted stuff in my favorite genres, I can't resist!  I have to look at it every time.

I know I should not put in any favorite genres but, eeeeeee, it's so hard not to.  All I can think of is the books I'd miss if I didn't have that there!  My reminder list has grown from that and I definitely order a book or two a week because of that.

Yes, and then there's Half.com.  I try to just look up my WL stuff to see what it's selling for.  I'm cheap so I told myself if I would only buy stuff if it was $2 or under.  With shipping, that's no more than $5.49 per book.  I have actually ordered a couple of WL items from there because I found them for under that price and I was waaaaay back on the WL.  Then, I check out the seller's other items and usually find another book to add on to the order.  I shouldn't check out the other stuff but I can't help it!
