A book I ordered simply for the setting following a trip to Kruger National Park in South Africa. It is an odd duck. I thought it was a murder mystery going in, but after reaching the halfway point in the book I gave up on that notion. Instead it is a novel about a group of people, with various foibles, thrown together for a tour of a wildlife refuge. The park visit changes their relationships to each other. It is also odd in that it is dated to the apartheid era of South Africa and describes racism and bigotry as societal norms. The story sometimes examines how race relations affect the various characters, and in general tries to sway old attitudes towards more of the tolerance and equality we have today, which isn't perfect, but is certainly better than this not so distant past. It is interesting if you have traveled to South Africa post-apartheid, and many of the insights are worth reading as a then and now kind of comparison. It is not a great book, but is surprisingly not a bad book. An odd, little quirky thing with interesting insights into humanity. And no murder. Funny, but I was trying to solve who the investigator was going to be. And who was going to be the victim. And who was going to be the killer.
