Not a bad book, just not as good as the others in the series. Character development takes a backseat to the story, with a plot that is complex, convoluted and involves the most unlikeable cast of characters imaginable. If you are new to the series, start at the beginning.

Dana Stabenow's Kate Shugak series is an intelligent, very well written, funny, challenging mystery series. It is wonderful watching Dana's character development of Kate and all the other wonderful people who live in these books. A book series well worth reading!!

A mother is convicted of killing her son in a house fire and after 31 years her daughter wants Kate to find the real killer even though the mother admits she is guilty.
Although there does not seem to be much hope in solving such an old cold case ,when people suddenly start dying in apparent accidents the coincidences are to suspicious to ignore.
Keeping track of the characters is a little difficult but they are colorful and interesting.
If you have been reading the series then the passages with Chopper Jim will give you a chuckle or two.
The references to past cases will bring the reader up to date on previous stories and makes it easier for new readers to jump right in.
