This book I found hard to put down. It's set in the West at a ranch which is owned by Tally Bernard, who disguises herself as a man as protection from men who would do her harm. Betrayed by a man she once loved, Tally has sworn off men and expends all her energy on her ranch. It's backbreaking labor, given that the ranch is struggling to survive in its beginning stages. Tally's brother disappears after travelling to buy more cattle for the ranch. A villain, Tally doesn't see him for what he is. A man, Simeon comes to her ranch seeking work. He has ulterior motives besides work at Tally's ranch. He's also a werewolf. However, a love affair develops between these two main characters both are sincerely in love with the other. However they both hold a dark secret that could undermine their fragile relationship. Very good suspense; well-rounded characters and good plot. A paranormal story set in the West. What more can you ask for?

Susan Krinard is a master story teller. Her books are not your typical formatted romance novels -they are complex in plot and in the characters, with lots of twists and unpredictable surprises a long the way. Very rarely I'm I disappointed by one of her books, so naturally I like this one a lot and thoroughly enjoyed it for all those things I mentioned above. If your a paranormal junkie who enjoies historically based settings, you'll like it. On scale of 1 to 10, I give it an 8.

Not as good as the book with Kieran Holt as hero (Prince of Shadows)...but also one of Krinard's werewolf romances.

When Tally's brother goes missing in the unforgiving Arizona wilderness, she hires Simeon Wartrace Kavanaugh to find him but, disguised as a boy, insists that he take her along. Sim knows the person dressed in the baggy boy's clothing is a woman, and he can't figure out how she has managed to fool everyone else. But he lets her keep her secret. After all, Sim has more than a few of his own, including the fact that he is a shape-shifter, and at this point in his life, he'd rather run with the wolves than hang out with humans. But Sim has an ulterior motive where Tally's errant sibling is concerned, and Old West justice isn't out of the question.
