A book you can't put down. A great weekend read.

I loved the writing style.

One of JCOs easier reads, it is about a cranky writer who is in need of an assistant in his home because of his ailing health. It is about him and his assistant, who harbors some prejudices against him because of what she was taught as a child.

I am a Joyce Carol Oates fan and love everything I've read by her, but I did not care for this book. After 130 pages and not picking the book up after two weeks, I gave up. I felt guilty for doing so, because I love JCO but I wasn't interested. I think I couldn't identify with or care about the characters. Also, by page 130, nothing had happened. A strange 38-year-old man, who I thought was an old man for the longest time, because he acts just like one, FINALLY hires an assistant.
