I never realized how much I came to depend on the APC machine until I went today to try and mail packages and it was having techinical difficulties and could only print out either the really large labels or books of stamps.  It must have been out of the smaller stamps that I normally use.

I hope they fix it tomorrow!

That's actually one of the reasons I switched to using the PBS preprinted postage. The only time I can make it to our PO is after they are closed. Ever since the increase in stamp price our APC is constanly out of the small postage stamps and only has the large ones available. I never have enough cash on me to buy regular stamps from the vending machine

I just have it print out the exact amount I need to mail my PBS books...ie most books cost 2.13 to mail, so I ask it to print me out whatever number of $2.13 stamps I need.

Although there was that one time last year, right around when the postage increase ocurred, that one machine couldn't do that for me...

this was the first time since it was installed (I'm not sure when that was).  these were slightly larger packages so I needed some $2.47 and a $2.81 - those I wouldn't keep on hand.  I was also mailing a pkg ot my sister so had to go anyway.  I did find one close to where I work so I went there at lunch.

only reason why I don't use PBS postage is the extra cost.  I'd have to buy a scale and in the long run it isn't worth it to me because I'm not going that far to where my post office is, in fact I could walk there if I was so inclined

Just yesterday I went to the post office to use the APC and for some reason it didn't have media mail and the book I sent cost me $5.30 instead of $2.37.I just used it a week or so ago and it's like they no longer offer Media Mail. For the most part I use PBS printable postage but when I am sending out a freebie to a friend I use the APC at the post office. Not sure what to do now.

Robin, the APC doesn't have a media mail option, never has.  What you have to do is buy a stamp of a different value (in the buy stamps section).  Then you put in $2.13 or $2.47 or whatever depending on the weight of the book.  I'm sure they do this so people don't abuse MM.

and good news, they restocked my APC machine and I was able to use it this morning!

I could have sworn there was an option because it was at the bottom and said it was for cds, dvds and books, etc. There were a whole list of options and then yesterday there was only 3 options. When you first get  started it had choices for a letter, large envelope like a bubble mailer and a package.Once you made that choice, there were more options but yesterday there were only  the three options ,Priority,2 day and standard.I'm telling you it was very annoying because I had been using it for weeks and then all of a sudden it was gone.It even offered a label but I usually decline because it was hand addressed, then it would spit out a nice little stamp. Now I feel like I'm going crazy.Maybe there were issues and they decided not to do it anymore.

Are you sure it wasn't that the BUY STAMP option wasn't available?  That happens when one paper tray is out of stock, and the other isn't.

There's never been a MEDIA MAIL (DVD, CD, book mentioning) option. Period. You must know the MEDIA MAIL rate yourself (2.13 up to 1 lb and add .34 for each lb thereafter) and be certain your package is clearly marked MEDIA MAIL.

$5.30 sounds awfully expensive for a single book - even for First Class! One standard hardcover should cost about 2/3 that much at most.

Now that I think on it,I'm not a hundred percent. All I know is that half the options that were there a week ago weren't there yesterday and the postage doubled.I mailed a book  that was 1 lb. 10 oz and it should have cost no more than $2.60.There was mention of mailing media(but it wasn't there yesterday) so maybe that's why I thought I may have been using media mail.I am just so confused and frustrated.Went to the USPS site and downloaded the shipping assistant..I'll try that next. You can print up postage from that, including Media Mail, wish me luck.

interesting if your APC had some sort of media mail option, mine never has had it and I always needed to know the rate.  but there was a scale by the APC machine that you could weigh it and push book rate and it would tell me how much.

you'll do fine Robin!

I've never seen a Media Mail option - if there were one, it'd be on ALL machines, not just some. I've run across "limited" options when one of the trays ran out of paper and it was FIRST/PRIORITY or nothing.

Yeah, Robin, I think you probably sent it Priority.  The best part of the APC machine is the huge bucket loader of a drop box there is!

Maybe her APC was running some sort of limited test where there WAS a media mail option for a while?
