Much as I love Wuthering Heights and Jane Eyre, this is the novel that made Anne my favorite Bronte. The novel tells the story of a woman trapped by marriage to an abusive, alcoholic husband. While dramatic, Tenant does not have all the overwrought emotions of say, Wuthering Heights. Anne just seems a little more grounded in reality than her sisters.

The forward is not worth reading carefully & I would have skipped the footnotes but very much enjoyed the great story! Recommended tp any historical fiction fan.

I found this book to be an interesting study on marraige relations at the time. When Helen left her abusive husband to live on her own, I did not see anything wrong. But then I thought more closely of the time period and about what women were expected to do for their husbands. I could then see why the people around Wildfell Hall were so shocked. I was equally shocked when she returned to him when he was sick. She was amazingly devoted considering how abusive he was. He scared me in ways that Heathcliff does not. Maybe it was his outward anger and Heathcliff is mostly seething on the inside. I cannot help to compare the two sisters, Ann and Emily. I am glad that Helen found love at the end of her battle.

This was very interesting. Morose, and sensual. Has that same "imagined" feel that all of the Bronte stuff has, aside from Vilette.

Very good. A Bronte book that not everyone manages to get to. I really enjoyed it.
