I have some softcover "books" of music, as in popular music, songs with decent piano arrangements including words and chord symbols. Each one is titled, Harms' Hits Through The Years. There are 50 songs in each.

The reason I ask this is that I have noticed that guitar music is in great demand, though rarely posted. I was just thinking that since I don't have a piano any more and probably never will, I just won't be using them and should pass them on to someone who will.

Are these regarded as postable on PBS?

I will check on this for you.  My gut instinct is no.

Are there ISBNs on the books?

I would think if they have an isbn, they would be- as long as they're books, not pamphlets.  And if they had inserts, like a cd, that would have to be included.

Ok, John...the official word...(or what I was told by another awesome tour guide)

Do they meet these criteria..

1.  Is it  at least 50 pages in length?  If yes, keep going

2.  Does it have an ISBN?  If yes, keep going

3.  Does it contain any advertising?  *Crossing my fingers this is a no for you*

If it has no advertising, has 50 pages AND and ISBN, you are ok to post :)  Feel free to click my name and PM me if you have any more questions. :)

Publication date on all is 1955. ISBNs did not exist. Nor did CDs. LP records were very new then. All they have on title page is publication date and Harms' Inc. New York, N.Y.

ISBN isn't a good indicator, older books often don't have one and some magazines (not postable) do have them.

IMO the pamphlet guideline and advertising would be the most important facts for these?

This comes down to page number since there is no ISBN.  If there are more than 50 pages they can be posted as a book under Post a Book with No ISBN,  If there are less than 50 pages, you can't post them.

(If there's advertising it's a different story)

I'm trying, John...really I am!smiley

I think your best bet is to send in Feedback and ask.

Printed music is in the USPS's definition of Media Mail, but I would question whether what you have is considered a book or not.

What makes a difference is if it is 50 pages or not because that's the line between a book and a booklet.

Less than 50 pages is a booklet...booklets without ISBNs can't be posted.  Once we determine page number it will be neatly wrapped up.  mail

I guess you really do learn something new every day.

I asked a few years back: Printed music in book form is considered a book here.  (Unbound sheet music would not be.)  So if there's no ISBN, you can post it if it has over 50 pages.

Is my book okay to post here?

Books without ISBNs: Yes *

  • *If they have at least 50 pages.  See information about booklets/pamphlets below
  • You can post books that do not have ISBNs using the Post a Book Without an ISBN feature, accessible via a link at the top of the Post Books page.

Pamphlets/Booklets/leaflets without ISBNs: NO

  • These sometimes contain advertising; members also complain at having to pay a credit for these.
  • Leaflets = non-children's books with less than 20 pages
  • Booklets = non-children's books with less than 50 pages
  • Leaflet/pamphlets/booklets with ISBNs may be posted
    • if so, the number of pages must be included in the item description.
  • Children's books do not count as booklets or leaflets, even if they are short.
    • Children's books can be expected to have short pagelengths and the booklet/leaflet designations do not apply.

And the advertising, it is okay if it is of other books by the same publisher.  Like the listing and summaries at the back of books.  In house ads.  But it is not okay if it is for another company, such as if it looks paid for.  So the ads for other publications in the series is fine.  But the X ray spec glasses ads are not okay.

In the same respect, we can include an "invoice" (AKA the PBS second page info, even with personal comments added) and we can include items like bookmarks.  But we cannot include a note or letter.

This is in regards to media mail.  No such restrictions on first class.

The one I have in front of me has 80 pp, so i guess I will run it up the flagpole and see who salutes it.

No rock and roll, though, songs like Begin The Beguine and Autumn In New York.

I posted some old instructional music books that used to belong to my husband and they got snapped up really fast, so I bet someone will be interested.

And there ya go lol!

FYI, double checked with USPS when I visited yesterday, and they indicated that bound sheet music is considered Media Mail.

All the guitar and keyboard books  as well as voice lesson books I order have ISBNS now. The 50 page rule would be the issue for many of them.

NOTE:  Most children's books are NOT 50 pages long, so don't go solely by the page count as the determining factor for postabiiity.

If a book has an ISBN, you're okay, even if it's under 50 pages.  Just be sure the number of pages is listed in the description.  If the number of pages isn't there, click on the title, then on "more options" --> "edit book data", and you can add it.  While you're on the edit book data page, add any other missing info that you can, too.
