This was a well-written, engrossing book. I hated to put it down. It's been a long time since I've loathed a character as much as I loathed the misogynistic father in this story, which is (for me, anyway) a sign of good novel. The funny thing is, the father here is not a truly horrible person. He is, I suppose, doing the best job that he can under the circumstances, and did not have an easy or loving childhood himself. I never felt any sympathy for him though. Most of the time, I wanted to strangle him or beat some sense into him. The fact that the children do manage to grow up, and with such resilience in spite of their hardships, gives the story an uplifting feel. I look forward to reading more of Anitra Sheen's work, so here's hoping she's started a second novel.

Terrific novel about a sister and two brothers who grow up largely unsupervised in LA in the 1950's. This one stays with you long after you've finished it. Highly recommend!

Heartfelt story of 2 brothers and a sister, growing up with only their father. A funny, poignant book....didn't want to put it dow.
