I received a book today and in a quick flip through (well, not really flip through since it opens right to it) I noticed that the spine is coming away from the pages in the middle. Making it split into two chunks. The break from the spine goes about halfway up. I wanted to make sure this is a RWAP before I mark it and would love advice on how to best explain it to the sender. I'm nervous about marking it RWAP since I haven't marked one yet (despite a few that I found out later were in no way postable). Help please!

If you decide it is a RWAP - please don't shy away from calling it just that and asking for your credit back. You are being part of PBS"s quality control in this transaction. If it doesn't meet the conditions and guidelines that PBS set forth then you need to mark it RWAP and ask for return of the credit. I know it's wscary to confront someone. I hate it, too. But I learned that if I didn't do it, the next person that sender sends to might just send the same or worse. Whereas, if you stop it now, they can learn and you can - hopefully - get your credit back. Ruth ETA - Binding:

I think the part I quoted would mean that the book can't be in 2 separate sections. Opening to one page is not the same as a broken spine which is what I visualize you saying. Ruth |

It's in two separate sections at the bottom of the book but about halfway up it goes back into one section. That's why I'm not sure if I should mark it RWAP.
ETA- I marked it RWAP using the little sample letter from the help docs for my PM. I just feel bad about it for some reason. |

We all feel badly the first few times it happens. That's why it's good that it doesn't happen so often - or shouldn't happen so often. Ruth |

It seems to be going well. I got the credit back, but the sender wants the book back (so I'm waiting to hear if she will cover the postage). I've had a number of great swaps. Even receiving books in like new condition, so I know that it isn't the norm to receive a problem book. I'm so glad I found this place, I've definitely saved some money and gotten to share some great books that were clogging up my shelves. Now, I just have to catch up on my reading and lower my TBR list.

Please do not send the book back without getting another credit to cover postage. I did that once with the "promise" of a credit to cover - never happened. It was a learning experience all around. And I know he sent it on to someone else even though it was water damaged and I told him so. That's back when I was new and - nice! ;D Ruth |
