First book I've read by this author. Will definitely read more from Ms. Gardner.

Updated after reading the first four books.
This is book two of the ongoing Quincy-Rainie series. In order the books are:

"The Perfect Husband" intro of Pierce Quincy
"The Third Victim" intro of Rainie Conner
"The Next Accident" intro of Kimberly Quincy
"The Killing Hour" intro of Michael "Mac" McCormack
"Gone"
"Say Goodbye"

I have not read the last two books but the rest have all been great reads. I would suggest reading these books in proper order just to understand and appreciate the dynamics of each character and their interaction with each other. However, there is enough background info given in each book so that they don't necessarily need to be read in order.

This book is a page-turner from the get go. Lisa Gardner is my absolute favorite author. The book is suspensful and sad since it deals with school shootings and the aftermath. And it also touches on the feelings of parents whose child becomes a murderer.

I'm so glad I decided to try Lisa Gardner again. Her D. D. Warren series didn't work for me, but the FBI profiler has me hooked! This is a solidly written, carefully plotted and suspenseful story with good, believable characters. It kept me reading despite the horrors and heartbreak that more than one of the people go through. I particularly liked Gardner's deft handling of the interaction between Rainie and Quincy. A romance between these two wouldn't fit the dark mood of the story, but their chemistry hit just the right note. Definitely a series I'll try again.

From Publishers Weekly
In her new thriller (following The Other Daughter), Gardner deftly probes the psychology of school shootings while developing a cast of complex, compelling characters. Rainie Conner initially joined the small-town police force in Bakersville, Ore., to escape the ghosts of her past. When she responds to a call from the local school and discovers students screaming, bodies lying inert in the rooms and one young boy holding two guns, however, Rainie find herself leading a controversial investigation and struggling to contain her childhood memories. The fact that the boy is the son of the town sheriff, Rainie's superior and friend, only intensifies the pressure Rainie endures from members of the community, the FBI and the media. Although she tries desperately to do her work amid the growing criticism, Rainie begins to question her own fragile psychological stability. Fortunately, she finds solace in the arrival of the gentlemanly Pierce Quincy, an FBI profiler with a sharp mind and a soft shoulder. The duo eventually reach the conclusion that someone else must be responsible for the massacre, someone who may have recruited the boy to do the shootings. A suspenseful, curl-up winter read, this thriller teems with crisp, realistic dialogue and engaging characters. (Feb.) Forecast: Even though Gardner has only three titles under her belt, her adept use of language and her strong characterizations will ensure her a broad, loyal following. Readers won't be disappointed to learn that Special Agent Pierce Quincy will reappear in her next offering, which is still untitled.

One of my favorite Lisa Gardner thrillers! Officer Rainie Conner, leading her first homicide investigation, stands at the center of another controversy. What worsens the situation? The suspected killer? the local sheriff's thirteen year old son.

FBI profiler, Pierce Quincy, comes to her aid and...into her heart.

Good one!

The Third Victim is the second in the Quincy/Rainie series, and introduces small town cop Rainie Connor. A school shooting involving the sheriff's son disrupts Rainie's quiet Oregon town. FBI profiler Pierce Quincy has been researching school shootings, and he and Rainie determine that the case is not as cut and dry as it at first seems.

Unlike the first book in the series (The Perfect Husband), this book reads more like a mystery than a thriller. Though there is however plenty of suspense and action, much time is spent introducing Quincy and Rainie and telling their backstories. I found the ending somewhat disappointing in that it seemed like the connections between the primary school shooting story and Rainie's background were somewhat forced, but ultimately the characters are interesting enough to make this a worthwhile read. I am looking forward to the next installment in this series.
