Had heard that this very early Patterson book was one of his best, but I was disappointed. None of the characters was particularly likeable. Berryman was not well enough developed for me to care about him, and other than the reporter who is writing about him -- almost all the other characters had very distant supporting roles. I ended up skimming the book and pretty much looked forward to finishing and not having to pick it up again.

this is probably Patterson at his best..early in his career, before he felt like he had to pump out NYT best sellers every other month. Should satisfy the mystery lover in all of us.

Didn't take very many pages to know I wouldn't read it, either his first or one of his first but it started out a mess and the more I read the more confused I was as to what this was about but by then I didn't care.

Won the Edgar for best first novel and launched the career of one of the most prolific and best-selling authors of our time. For those reasons, it's worth reading.

PLEASE REMEMBER THIS IS HIS FIRST PUBLISHED WORK -- A more undeveloped piece of work; a much less mature style of writing than what we are used to from him today. Still a master from the literary world.
