Hi all,

I found this site 2 weeks ago and I am L*O*V*I*N it:) I do have this to add which might explain the bad shape books folks have been receiving. I found out about this site on a freebie list I subscribe to. I am SURE that some of the folks on that list ran over here to get the 2 free books for posting 10 books deal, with no intention of staying or participating. Same thing happened last year when I found out about a video game trading site. Tons of people joined to get free games and the quality of game condition went WAY down, long time members were complaining.

Now....I am sure, like me, there were others that joined in earnest and are obeying the rules/guidelines, but, I am also sure the majority of the people that came off the "freebie list" posted anything they didn't want, didn't read the rules, didn't give a hoot, got the 2 free books and will be gone soon. Just a thought IMHO.

PBS is aware that this can be an issue...it used to be 3 free credits for 10 books (I think) and it was reduced in order to try to reduce the problem.  I am not sure what can be done about it other than taking the free credits away.  I would hate to see that happen, as it could lead to a reduction in the number of good members signing up.

I got an unpostable book today too.  It's one of those oversize softcover books and there is a 1/4 inch gash on the top edge of the cover that actually goes thru 70 pages!  (No damage to the envelope).  It was mailed in a large manila envelope and they taped the WHOLE sheet of paper with the mailing label on it.  But, they didn't tape the top or bottom of the sheet so most of that got torn off.  I was lucky I received it at all.  I should have marked it RWAP, but I didn't.  I chose instead to just let the person know they need to be more careful when taping down the label.  Sigh...another book for the Goodwill.

<<I should have marked it RWAP, but I didn't.>>

Unfortunately, it is also actions like this (no offense, Susan) which enable "scammers" and senders of bad books to continue.  I've gotten bad books from long time members, so it isn't just folks rushing over for free credits (if that were it, presumably they wouldn't send the books at all, just take their freebies).  But we all have a "civic duty" to PBS to mark RWP as such, so that a record can be made, and abusers given the boot.

Cheers,

Catt

I agree with Eliz here.  Susan, if you receive a damaged book, you def should RWAP.  Its only by PBS members doing this, does PBS work!

Those are actually the people that we don't need to worry much about.  If they have no intention of staying and participating, then why would they actually send any of the books they posted?

Oh my.  I always seem to get my hands slapped whenever I post something.  I didn't want to mark it RWAP, because I wasn't even 98% sure the silly book didn't get damaged somehow after it was mailed.  So I guess I failed my "civic duty"...sorry about that.

I've learned that the members of PBS are the "quality police" for PBS.  We have to call everyone on any book that doesn't meet the condtion  guidelines.  It really scares me when I have to tell someone that a drop of water damage makes it unpostable.  But I did it and now he knows and I hope he learns from it.

I would think that people who are just looking for free books would be more likely to post 10 books to get their 2 free books, and then ignore requests to mail out requested books and abandon their accounts.  Books on PBS are not "free" past the first two credits you receive when you sign up.

Sorry you were feeling hand slapped, Susan. I doubt anyone intended it that way.

It does help if you mark any book received with a problem as such--even if it is damaged in transit. The site owners can then see whether there is a pattern of problems.

If you educate your sender, or if yours is the last strike against him, it lessens the chance of the next person having to deal with the same thing. They weren't saying "you did bad"; they were saying "please help look out for me and my books (and I'll do the same for you.)"

Carol, I have never heard of a video game trading site! Where can I find that? I have quite a few games and would love to swap instead of always buying new.

Sita, you can trade video games (along with everything else) on TitleTrader. It's not a site JUST for videogames, but you can trade them on there for sure.

It's the people who post books just get the 2 freebies that clog up the FIFO lines.   They are why you can request a book and have it go it time out on 2 or 3 people before it gets accepted.  They don't usually take the time ti send out any books.

Yes, those are the people who are freebie hunters.  I don't mind getting freebies myself, but I do mind if it's messing up the system in place.

Wow, this does seem to explain why for the last 10 or so trades, about half of them have had some kind of water damage or tearing that makes the books unpostable. Since folks can hide their profile and join information now, I have no idea how many of them are newbies or that ugly word, "scammers" here for a few free books. :(

Sometimes you can get a pretty good idea of how long a member has been here by looking for the earliest dates a book has been posted or WL'd.

If they hide their bookshelf that won't work, but if they put their WL on auto then that can show date info.

In my first week on PaperBack swap I had three cancelations. I was thinking perhaps I was getting the cancelations because the other person saw that I was new.

Susan...I most definately did not mean to do any hand slapping here!  I just know from when I was brand new that I wasn't sure or was afraid to mark damaged books sent to me as RWAP.  I mean, if anyone is familiar with Ebay, you know that marking something with a negative is like a slap in the face.

But here, I've come to learn that its different and in actuality, the system works better when members tell it like it is.  I know its difficult for some folks and just figured I'd try to help support you in RWAP when its called for.

I've gotten damaged books that I asked for credits back on and others that I didn't but I still marked it RWAP (and later resolved).

It sounds to me like the free credits people get for joining (and posting their 10 titles) shouldn't be credited to their account until they have had at least one successful transaction OUT.  It might sink in better that the best way to get "free" stuff is to follow the rules.  Maybe?
