Wow, this book was really great. Take note, however, this is NOT paranormal romance/supernatural suspense. It's straight, ball busting horror, more in the vein of stephen king and the more contemporary Poppy Z Brite. There is no romance, not that much action and nothing funny. It's literary horror, think old school gothica with a modern twist. no happy endings here folks. but the prose is beautiful and ms. Kiernan's universe is harsh and violent. i liked it so much i read it in one night!

Excellently creepy, and with an unusual twist to the premise. I found the end satisfying.

First off, this is not Horror of the Splatter Sort...Paleontological??? Yep...this story is Ages Old yet as contemporary as...yesterday...Ms Kiernan is a trained Paleontologist..so her premise of "some old horror/monster" is not far-fetched..but the story is FETCHING with teeth to spare...read this, and her novel SILK..you won't be disappointed..but you might not sleep so easy, for a few nights, either...

bon chance

I can't decide if I liked this book or if I hated it. On one hand the narrator has a lyrical almost musical voice that leads the reader in a creepy little dance long before any of the monsters rear their heads. That on top of the interesting concept of monsters older than time set into the fossil record and, even deeper concepts of belief and faith and distortion of them into many things, makes the story compelling and pushes the reader forward. The problem lies in the authors odd way of phrasing things and her weird almost compulsive habit of smashing two words together to make a new one. If it were occasional it wouldn't even be a blip on my radar but she did it on literally every page, occasionally every paragraph. In the end I couldn't decide if it was meant to throw the reader off balance and add to the creepy vibe of the book or if the author was just being pretentious. Either way it leaves me entirely undecided about this book so it gets a middle of the road 3 out of 5.

I requested this book expecting to be at least a little scared and sucked into the plot. Neither happened. The character development was just bizarre and the story was boring.
