For the most part, this Rendell standalone is more of a multiple person character study than a mystery. The action takes place in and around a building of six apartments, and each of the residents (as well as a couple of across-the-street neighbors) have a time at center stage. Midway through the book, there is a murder, and the dark side of each of the characters makes for interesting speculation about "who done it." This is all Rendell doing what she does best, though I couldn't give the book five stars because I don't think she played fair in the end.
