I have to admit that I was a little hesitant to start this book based on my bad experience with Stephen Bocho but this was an awesome book that gripped me from the very beginning page. Shane gets a phone call in the middle of the night from his ex-partner's wife; she is begging him to come rescue her from her abusive husband whom he could hear in the background. He reluctantly goes and immediately the husband takes a swing at him with a baton then takes a shot at him but Shane ducks. Shane had no choice but to shoot which killed Ray Molar. His life goes into the toilet from there; he discovers layer upon layer of corruption, fraud and conspiracy all the way up to the mayor but he has no credibility at all. He gets surprising help from Alexa and the two of them take the whole thing on. It was fast-paced yet Cannell gets into the emotional side of the main characters so the reader knows the things important to them. On top of it all, Shane is taking care of Sandy's 15 year old son who is on the road to nowhere. Chooch adds a great depth to Shane. I am eager to read the next book in the series now. Warning: there is some rough language and violence in this book.

We are four out of four on this book - my self, husband, mother & best friend - all really enjoyed this book as well as the other Shane Scully novels. This is the *first* of five books in which LAPD detective Shane Scully is the main character.

Enjoyed listening to it even though it has the same story live as other books. The reader is exceptional to listen to. It is not necessary to read the books in order but might make it more enjoyable to read in order of publication.

Fast moving with interesting characters. Not sure if I would enjoy the story line, but I ended up reading and not wanting it to end. That is what I like a about a book.
