I know one too...she is from Russia and is one of the nicest women I have ever met.  She came over about 8 years ago.

I know one and have met several others, though they don't like the term "mail order bride".  A friend of my husband found his wife on a website that matches women from the Phillipines who want to marry American men.  She is a total sweetheart, beautiful and intelligent and they seem to be a very happy couple.  I didn't like him much before he married her, but he's actually tolerable now!

They have the occasional infomercial for "mail order brides" aka "Cherry blossoms," on late night TV.

Here's the website, in case you want to sign up!  http://www.blossoms.com/

Sharon,

Thanks for the tip!

Pamela

PS.  I was getting a lot of grief for all the books I mailed out this month, and one of them was a book about mail order brides, that is how this came up.  I would never make fun of this idea, having known some really great women that came over here this way.

Yes, she is from the Phillipines.  Very sweet girl.  Her husband is a lot older than she is, but they seem happy.  DH also works with a guy who has a mail order bride as well.

Our neighbor Antonella was a very sweet woman from Romania. Unfortunately the man that "mail ordered" her was abusive and cruel. We helped her become a citizen, get her paperwork in order, and dicorve him. While some men that use mail order services really are just lonely, nice guys who don't have time to date, others have sadistic tendencies and want a sex slave. Poor Antonella got the second one.   : \

I used to work with a woman from Russia and she knew someone..think it was a neighbor.but the woman spoke no english and had a young young daughter and the man would only by her lingerie...no clothes and no driving. she had to take her daughter to the dr on a bicycle and even then it was a nightmare. don't think he hit her but was extremely controlling. my exbf's father married someone from the honduras and they mostly had written correspondence..then his friend married someone and she immediately got pregnant w hen he didn't want kids and had said that repeatedly...this guy just wanted a young wife to keep him company and othing else but s he had ot her ideas! plus he didn't speak spanish w hile exbf's dad was pretty fluent.

My next door neighbor's son now has a Philipino bride (and her son), but unfortunately, I think she's just in it for the citizenship...

Sadly i think some of these guys want a very submissive wife. I hate to say it but they want the June Cleaver type woman who will not argue with them or have a mind of their own. I remember seeing a documentary about mail order brides, they interviewed a few men. While most men will deny that they are looking for a submissive wife, some openly admitted that American women were too independant or outspoken, or career driven,or gold diggers.

Yeah - the submissive wife-seeking guy is one of the stereotypes, as well as the older guy seeking a young wife.  One of the others is the woman who will marry any american guy in order to get over here.  Then once she gets permanent residency, she leaves him.   Several years ago I knew a woman who did just that.

If you ever see any of the infomercials on this, they can be pretty interesting.  My personal fave was one where the mail order wife was from South America, living with her American husband in a mid size US city.  DH and I were practically LOTFLOAO when the husband explained that after 2 years together he still didn't speak a word of Spanish, and she didn't speak a word of English, but they were so "in love."  IIRC, they had 2 kids and another on the way.  Yeah...love.

Your right Sharon, i forgot about the women. I agree there are some that are in it for a better, richer life in American.
