I'm currently reading THE PHYSICIAN and am trying to decide what to read next.  What novels would you consider as "must"  reads in historical fiction?  Would would be your top 10 picks?  I would love your input!   Thanks!  smiley

I love that book list!  I'm a "watcher,"  and I have also contributed to the list........I apologize if my request was too personal.

Anna, your request wasn't too personal at all.  Letty was just trying to direct you to a good resource to answer your question.  I think it's funny that "our" list is not really very representative of what gets mentioned most often on this forum as our favorite HF.  The top ten are:

Gone With The Wind
Pillars of the Earth
Outlander
To Kill A Mockingbird
The Red Tent
Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society
The Help
The Other Boleyn Girl
The Good Earth
The Clan of the Cave Bear

If we did a poll of JUST the HF forum members, I bet only Outlander and The Clan of the Cave Bear would make our top 10.

Here are a few threads where a similar question has been asked:

All Time Favorite HF Book

Beyond Philippa Gregory

In Need of a Good Book

2009 Top 5 I've Read This Year

2010 Mid-Year Best

Hey, Anna!  In no particular order, here are some of my most-favorite HF books -

Aztec - Gary Jennings.  Probably my favorite HF book ever.

The Witching Hour - Anne Rice.  Probably tied with Aztec as my favorite book of all time.

Outlander - Diana Gabaldon. I've read the first three books in the series and have enjoyed them all.

An Instance of the Fingerpost - Ian Pears.  Maybe not for everyone, but I really liked it, as did several others here.

When Christ and his Saints Slept - Sharon Kay Penman

The Saxon Chronicles - This is actually a series by Bernard Cornwell.  Really, really excellent.  (You can take this with a grain of salt. I'm one of the resident Cornwell fanatics around here, and the Saxon Chronicles are my favorite.)

The Clan of the Cave Bear - Jean Auel.  Pre-historic fiction at it's best!

I've only been reading HF seriously for two or three years, so I haven't gotten to a lot of books yet.  To date, though, these are the ones that come to mind.

You all know who & what I'm about to mention ...

  • Colleen McCullough - Masters of Rome series, beginning with First Man in Rome
  • James Clavell - Shogun, Tai-Pan, Noble House
  • Morgan Llywelyn - Lion of Ireland, Finn MacCool, Druids ... really just about anything by her!

And, ringing endorsements for the already mentioned Sharon Kay Penman, Elizabeth Chadwick, Bernard Cornwell, Sara Donati & Diana Gabaldon

There are lots of wonderful books & authors out there ...

Good luck!

Kelly

A few I haven't seen mentioned:

"Paradise Alley" Kevin Baker

"The Gates Of the Alamo" Stephen Harrigan

Any HF by David Liss, ie "The Whiskey Rebels" etc

"Little Big Man" Thomas Burger

You can't go wrong with Bernard Cornwell.

Oh, I can't forget to mention "The Agony and the Ecstasy" by Irving Stone. I don't think I've ever seen this book mentioned in a HF thread and it was terrific.
