I just received a paperback that has a cover that has been torn off vertically (about 1 inch from the binding) and then taped back on.   It's a good tape job covering about a third of the cover.    But still---do you think it meets the postable criteria?   I'll go with the majority of comments.   Thanks

If the rip is 1 inch or less, then yes, the book is postable.

If the rip is more than 1 inch, it's not postable.

Tape is allowed, however, it is the underlying rip which determines if the book is postable or not. The rules are pretty clear.

I eyeball things like that. I do not get a ruler out. I give the sender the benefit of the doubt if I think it looks like an inch and call it postable.

If the book was unpostable before the tape was applied, tape does not return a book to being postable. However, as Sara explained, tears up to 1 inch on the cover are acceptable and do not make a book unpostable so it sounds like you'd first have to determine if the tear akes it unpostable or not. I often tape a postable spine tear just to keep it from getting worse and making a book unpostable.

To be clear---The entire cover had been torn off ----vertically starting  about one inch over from the binding and extending the whole length of the book.

Yup, then that's not postable.

What they said about tape and postability.  So we're talking a tear of 5 inches or more?  That would be unpostable, regardless of how tidy the tape repair.

A book that has had the cover torn completely off and taped back on is not postable and would be a RWAP.

Your clarification helps, the 1" innch comment confused me, but your book was definitely unpostable before tape so still unpostable after tape.
