The Training and Care of the Versatile Hunting Dog
The Training and Care of the Versatile Hunting Dog Author:Sigbot Winterhelt and Edward D. Bailey The purpose of this book — The original reasons for bringing the various breeds to North America were probably as numerous as the numbers of dogs imported. Today the versatile breeds have a permanent niche with the hunting fraternity. As the areas of hunting space decline and urbanization continues, hunters will more and more require one dog that... more » can do an efficient job before and after the shot and on any game the hunter wants to bag.
Unfortunately, the versatile breeds have suffered from underuse of their potential for the most part. Primarily, their use has been as an upland bird dog capable of handling a variety of birds and limited use on waterfowl. Few have realized their full retrieving potential. Fewer still have been used as tracking dogs. They have been relegated to the "continental pointer" pigeon hole, a close working, methodical pointing dog for the on foot hunter. The other half of the versatile breeds' usefulness has remained dorment.
The main purpose of this book is to present training techniques and to teach how to use these techniques to enable you to have a truly versatile hunting companion. Obviously, these techniques are not the only correct ones. There are many innovations that lead to the same result -- a completely trained versatile hunting dog. The basics presented here are not the begin all and end all. Individual cases need individual techniques. Hopefully the steps of training and the philosophy of training will enable you to innovate when the occasion demands.
A second purpose is to assemble and pass on information on the care you should give your versatile dog both at home and in the field. Any hunting companion responds better to training and works more efficiently in the field if they recieve proper care, feeding, housing and grooming. A long and useful life depends on good care and training. Let down on one and you sacrifice the other!« less
