Traven is just about the only writer of polemic novels that I can tolerate. In fact, I have avidly devoured each and every book of his that I have read. His disgust with government and injustice in general is clearly delineated on the page, yet somehow he creates a sense of objectivity: This is just the way it is, a weather report of the human condition, or that part of it treated here. Each of Traven's Jungle novels, though thoroughly engrossing in itself, resonates well against the others.
