Of all Shute's novels, Trustee From the Toolroom is tied for first place, along side A Town Like Alice (a.k.a. The Legacy), as my favorite. Shute has a distinct and remarkable style which brings history alive through fiction, in some cases raising the eyebrows of the British government in concerns for military security. In these two novels, what attracts me most is the breadth of geography and history which Shute has a unique talent to capture and weave into a story. If you enjoy travel/geography or history, this book would be a find for you.
