THE TURN OF THE SCREW is an extraordinary ghost tale. Though Henry James may well have intended the reader to remain uncertain as to whether the ghosts were "real" or imagined by his distraught heroine (critics have interpreted the matter variously), the stories melodrama and gruesome ending have made it widely popular since 1898. As recently as the 1950's, a successful play and opera were based on it.
DAISY MILLER was first published in 1878. Although this novelette contains no supernatural ingredients, it is also a story of innocence and may be enjoyed and studied in conjunction with James' more macabre masterpiece.« less
