  That’s it -
I can retreat
once that indelible mark is made
a dowry to your heart
My life long passed into the chamber
fine fabrics and sweets
a wealth of longing
a camel or two

Guarding a scar,
Always fresh
just under the rim of skin
I wanted to extend what we shared
out into time,
Continue the thread of
our magical thinking,
but now we’re human beings again
raw –
and dispossessed

I didn’t know it would hurt so much
to be myself

Bone knows bone, they say
believes in life,
its own level density -
even when the soul desists
clamps its mouth
lets only dust in
swallows the rattle

My lonely lover,
we clasp hands beneath this cape of night,
plunge our knives into
The kindling eye of time
Its unknowable laws
to which we are attached
like to a cradle
to the death within sleep

You watched me crumple out
from hot sheets,
that satin speakeasy behind your eyes
Gather thorns and instruments
call them our habitual food
Use the slender portrait of our lives
as divining rod

I want to tell you –
you bathe with me in the same
dark water
drink my nipples with head bent to the stars –
golden grapes
constellations
ablutions to invisible ghosts

This story is yours and mine, love
yours and mine
I know because the pain is palpable
and perfect –
it binds the mind
takes its time
