Wow - another stunner from Anne Perry. This is the 10th book in the sereis - be sure to read them in order. A woman runs from her fiance only later to be arrested for murder. The twist at the end is great!

William Monk, the unquestionably handsome, somewhat vain, but genuinely tenderhearted "agent of enquiry" is back on the streets of Victorian London, investigating his 10th case, a missing woman. Miriam Gardiner was due to be betrothed to a much younger man, a well-to-do gentleman named Lucius Stourbridge. But during a family croquet party, the bride-to-be vanished, apparently fleeing in a coach driven by a family servant named Treadwell. Monk would normally be reluctant to get involved in a simple case of pre-wedding jitters, but his own recent marriage to the headstrong nurse Hester Latterly gives him a newfound empathy for the heartbroken Lucius. Of course, as always in Perry's historical mysteries, all is not quite as it seems. Treadwell is found murdered, and the missing Miriam becomes the number-one suspect. Monk is convinced that she "could and would do no intentional evil," even as Hester connects her to another illicit crime.

One of the Monk and Hester series of Victorian mysteries - not one of the best but still very good.

Read the books in the order they were written for best enjoyment! In the two series that Anne Perry authored, William Monk and Thomas Pitt, she builds the characters and their lives as she delves into their latest mystery which enhances her stories with an added dimension. If you wish to get the most out of her series, here are the Monk books in the order in which they were written: 1990-Face of a Stranger, 1992-A Dangerous Morning, 1994-A Sudden Fearful Death, 1995-The Sins of the Wolf, 1996-Cain His Brother, 1997-Weighed in the Balance, 1998 The Silent Cry, 1998-A Breach of Promise, 2000-The Twisted Root, 2000-Slaves of Obsession, 2001-Funeral in Blue, 2002-Defend & Betray, 2003-Shifting Tide. For historical (Victorian Age) fiction mystery lovers, she is the greatest for a delightful pageturner.

What a wonderful mystery read! Imagine a woman finding the love of her life, enjoying getting to him and uncovering a secret such that she runs away two weeks before the wedding. In addition, the coachman who takes her is murdered. Arrested for murder, she is released when police discover that the woman who raised her from a very young age has been stealing drugs from the hospital to care for poor, ill patients who can't afford them. The man who was killed died close to her home and was blackmailing her. Now it appears that this woman murdered the coachman so the first woman is released into the custody of her fiance and his family. When her fiance's mother is murdered the woman is again arrested.

Monk and his new wife, Hester, are deeply involved in the situation. First, Monk is hired to find the woman by the fiance. He does but, of course, so do the police. Arrested the second time, both women are accused on conspiring to commit both murders so the young woman can marry the young man who is wealthy. Both vigorously deny committing the murders. If they didn't, who did? The trial begins with the evidence overwhelming against the two women. It's easy enough to figure out who the murderer must be but not the surprising reason why until the final pages. Excellent read!

A young groom enlists private investigator William Monk to track down his fiancee... This is a series of Monk stories (but not like on TV, but, like, if you are talking about being a PI and solving cases, without the mental illness).( I couldn't spell nerousis!)
