They say that pirating of their ebooks did NOT go up.

“Ultimately it comes down to the desire to be where our customers are, to play fair with them in the assumption that they’ll play fair with us. And you know something? It’s worked.”

Here.

I'm hoping others will follow suit.

DRM is a pain in the butt.  I have a some books from Harlequin that I can't download right now because Adobe won't recognize me as the owner.  The only reason I can fathom is they were bought with a long defunct debit card... I don't know but it annoys.

I'm hoping they'll catch on to the fact that besides an added expense to each book sold with DRM on it, that while they may be locking their customers into their device they're also locking a lot of customers out of their store.

And everyone likes something different to read on, and some have more than one device. You don't want to have a lot of books that you can't take with you in the future, if you change machines.

You want everyone to be able to shop at your store. Not just a few.

Calibre has a debugger in it that will remove the DRM.  Are you able to still download the ebook Guinan?

Actually, if I recall, "Calibre" doesn't have DRM removal in the original code; however there are several third-party add-ons for "Calibre" that do the job quite efficiently.

That is legal stuff.  Calibre cannot offer it without getting into a mess.  So the third party set up.

DRM is the same in video games and you can be sure that has not stopped it being copied/pirated.  It did not even make a dent in the issue nor do DRM free games get copied more.   It just causes me annoyance for those that do use many devices,  I have a surface pro 2, a kindle, my cellphone and my desktop. I can and do read on all of them for a variety of reasons, so if I see a book that has DRM, then I will look for one that doesnt have it so I can USE what I buy.  They only ebooks I buy are research ones for my writing and thus needs to be where I am at all times.
