Most of the newer m/m romances are written by women. There are a few notable exceptions, such as Sean Michael. However, most are categorized as erotica. To me, it just means they have explicit sex scenes.
MM romance is an erotic love story. If this is what you are looking for, I highly recommend:
9-1-1 by Chris Owen
The Jarhead series by Sean Michael
Drawn Together by ZA Maxfield
Crossing Borders by ZA Maxfield
Between Friends series by Sean Michael
Soul Bonds by Lynn Lorenz
Laying a Ghost by Jane Davitt and Alexa Snow
On Fire series by Drew Zachary
Bareback and Natural Disaster by Chris Owen

Forgot to address the mystery element.
Josh Lanyon writes the kind of mystery romance you describe. I can't think of any female authors (and in fact Josh L. is a pen name and s/he won't reveal his/her gender), but maybe someone else will come along and post.
RWA now has a chapter that is GBLT. Do note that both erotica and romance fall under this group. But it is a great way to find authors. And what is about to be published.
An acquaintence's debut novel is a gay love story. I didnt read it b/c I dont do M/M but I know her writing well and she is an incredible writer. Gorgeous prose stylist. And she can write a scorching sex scene that still engages the emotions. Here is the amazon link to her book and u can check out the reviews. Hope this helps.
I had your friend's book on my WL forever. It just got accepted and is on its way. Yipee!
To my earlier post, I want to add Jay Quinn. His are contemporary love stories between men. No mystery. But they are very well done love stories.
