But my understanding from reading the press release is that Media Mail rates are safe until May.

Press Release 11/13/08

Yes. Only the classes of mail that are in direct compitition with UPS and fedEx are going up in Jan. That way when they announce their price increses, the USPS will anounce theirs too and the customers can compare the new rates.

I thought that the PO could only raise rates in May (or was it June) now.  Maybe that's just postage stamp rates???

Subject: May is basically for postage stamps for letters.

The reason the USPS did their rate change for packages  in January is to be more competative with UPS, Fed EX etc which all raise their rates in January.

I think that RKE is thinking of something said two Mays ago when the rates were hiked and the Forever stamp came out.  I want to say the USPS can only increase rates once a year but someone else probably knows for sure.

ETA:  The last sentence in that Press Release says that new rates will be announced in February and will be effective in May.

Awww, man. Hate paying more, but oh, well. It's not like I'm paying a king's ransom now. :)

Local Pastmistress yesterday informed me the increase will occur for packages around January 16th.  However, there is also a postal rate increase in the works for May of this year as well.

If you use stamps to mail, recommend the purchase of "Forever" stamps before then.  When the rates increase, they are able to be used without paying the extra increase.

Time to stock up on them.
