I got a book that look like someone took a box cutter to the spine and made a long cut down it. How could that happen? The wrapper was a little worn ar one of the corners but that's not where the cut was. The sender said it wasn't like that when it was sent, so for now I'm going to take their word for it because I wasn't planning on reposting it and it's in excellent condition otherwise (Hardcover without jacket).

No. But I had one come with red stains all over the wrapper, wrapped in plastic with a note from the PO "sorry we damaged your book".  I think it was red wine.

I've had books split/slit by the PO, but the wrapper was always damaged (shredded) in the same location.

I often get packages that have a slit along the side like someone peeked in... but they don't have the "This back was checked" on it... so.. either the machines do this or somewhere along the line someone is taking a peek, but not stamping it checked.

It doesnt seem very likely that the PO damaged the book without damaging the wrapper too.

That's my thought as well.  I actually have a book like that and I think it must have happened at the store where it was originally sold.  Whoever opened the box went a little deep with the box cutters.

I did that once opening a carton and slit open my finger as well! It took 14 stitches to close it!

If the wrapper isn't damaged or open, the PO didn't do it.
