I accepted an offer for a WL'd book on 1/1/08. The other member accepted and printed the label on 1/3/08. She PM'd me today and told me that she would not be able to mail out the book as planned since she was going out of town. So she said the transaction would cancel out and that I should re-request the book next week. I PM'd her and told her that it's a WL book so she will need to repost it  since I assume , if and when the transaction cancels on its own, it will delete itself from her bookshelf.  Therefore, its not a matter of re-requesting it since 56 other people want this book but a matter of her reposting it. Is my understanding of this correct? I also requested if it was still possible  on her end that she cancel the transaction now rather than letting it time out. although I'm not sure if she can. I actually don't mind waiting longer for this book. I just don't want to lose my place as #1 if and when either she or someone else posts this book.  She may have left out of town by now for all I know because I have not received a response from this morning. My concern is that I stay #1 even if the transaction cancels out and that I don't miss out on someone posting it in the meantime..

If you let the transaction cancel out on its own you will go back to #1 on the wishlist. She will have to repost the book b/c it will be taken off of her shelf.

HI Leticia,

Yes, you are right on all counts. She will need to repost it as it will be removed from her list after it times out. In the meantime though, you are now no longer #1 on the FIFO for this book. The system thinks (do computers think?? Sorry different topic altogether) that your wish has been granted at this point. So if someone else posts it before the transaction is canceled by the system, the member after you in line will get that offer. After the current transaction times out you will be put back into the #1 spot for the book. Too bad they didnt ask you if it was ok if they acceoted, printed, marked mailed and then mailed it when they came back. Hope you get your book soon!

Yep I kind of figured while this transaction was hanging in limbo that I would miss out if someone else posted this book. But waiting is not an issue since I have plenty to keep me busy right now. So hopefully my turn will come soon.

Thanks guys!

You could PM R&R and ask them to cancel and put you back at the head of the line.  They should probably also know about a member who takes you out of line, and then doesn't follow thru.

What the other member should have done was marked it mailed anyway and then PMed you to let you know about the later mail date. When the other member clicked the PM button on the My Account page for the transaction, they would have seen this text above the PM box:

"Please note: If you are planning to send a Personal Message to the other member about mailing your book later than already stated, remember that your arrangements in Personal Messages will not affect the deadline to mail this book. You must click that the book has been mailed before the deadline, even if you have not mailed the book then, to prevent the system from cancelling this transaction and passing this request on to another member." (Emphasis in italics added by me.)

So, while they should not have posted the book if they could not mail it by the deadline, they compounded their mistake by not clicking it mailed anyway and just PMing you to let you know when it would actually be mailed.

This is also mentioned in the Help Docs under "Can I send a book later?":

"If you do arrange late mailing with a requestor, you should mark the book mailed before the deadline to prevent the transaction from being canceled."

If it's not too late, you can PM the other member with this information so that they can do the right thing, whether that's cancelling the transaction on their end (rather than letting it time out) or marking it mailed anyway with a firm date by which they will actually mail the book (if that's acceptable to you).

Hope this helps!

Edited for formatting issues.

Well if it times out because she hasn't marked it mailed you'll go right back to the #1 spot.THis would be 2 days after the "Mail By Date" that she chose.  You could PM R&R and ask them to do it sooner if it's still a few days away. If it wasn't marked mailed it won't go "lost" making you wait the 26days.  If it was marked mailed then you need to contact R&R or you won't go back on WL until the 26days are up and the book goes "lost".  She'll have to repost the book when she comes back.  It won't just go on her shelf. Even if it wasn't a WL book, if a request is timed out or ignored like that the book is removed from the system to prevent other people from having the same problem.

if it is a WL'd book she may not be able to repost it until the OP receives a copy from someone else.  that is my understanding about when you cancel or let it time out on a WL book.

She accepted and printed it on 1/3/08. So I assume that means that she was willing to mail it out within two days. So if she gets an additional two days to mail that would give her a total of 4 days from 1/3/08. So it  should time out tomorrow. Or are my calculations wrong? I don't have an issue emailing R&R about it either especially if I'm wrong on when it will time out. Maybe that is the best thing to do at this point.

ETA: I've emailed R&R although it may just time out before they can even get to my issue.

If she cancelled for personal reasons when she reposts it should be offered to you again if you are still waiting for the book.  It's when  a book is cancelled because of requestor conditions that it can't be offered to the same person again.

Update: I emailed R&R and they won't cancel the transaction because the other member printed the label already. They have no way of knowing if she will actually mail the book despite the PM she sent me. Totally understandable so I guess I will just patiently wait for it to time out.

ETA: It's late and I keep catching my typos. : P
