The next sequel from the original "Women of Substance", Emma Harte. This book revolves around three of her great grand daughters. Tess is battling her husband for custody of their daughter. Linnet, the brilliant business women of the group is trying to prove she is the logical one to run the Harte Empire. And India is falling in love with a British artist and she is determined to marry him..no matter what. And there is Evan Hughs...Emma's American great grand daughter-trying to fit into the Harte family. The ambition, passion and volitile women of the next generation.
Emma Harte, the redoubtable heroine of veteran novelist Bradford's 1976 bestseller, A Woman of Substance, has been dead for 30 years, but she's still a player in the continuing family saga. Her pronouncements and unwritten rules are well remembered by all the descendants in the dynasty and business empire she founded. This installment begins where Emma's Secret (2004) left off, with Evan Hughes, the young visitor from the U.S., obtaining a dream job in fashion at the renowned London department store, Harte's, and beginning a romance with Gideon Harte, heir apparent to the family newspaper enterprise. In the previous volume, Evan learned that her own father was the illegitimate child of another Harte scion (making Evan and Gideon cousins a few times removed), and now she wonders whether she should divulge this secret to her father, who is soon to arrive in London. A true crisis distracts her, however: the disappearance of three-year-old Adele, adored daughter of store manager Tessa, one of Emma's great-grandchildren. Linnet, Tessa's half-sister and sometimes business rival, comes to the rescue and Adele soon reappears, but tensions between the sisters persist. Meanwhile, Linnet's cousin India has fallen in love with a painter from a working-class background, and India must battle her family's disapproval. The exploits and adventures of Bradford's indomitable heroines continue to make for lusty escapist fiction in this robust fifth novel in the series
The new blockbuster from one of the world's greatest storytellers delves into the lives of Emma Harte - the original Woman of Subtance - and the ambitious, passionate and volatile women of the next generation.
This is my favorite book in the series so far. This book was very involved and I was grateful for the little family tree at the beginning. This author is great with her happy endings and "Unexpected Blessings" did not disappoint.
"Evan Hughes, Emma's American great-granddaughter, is trying to integrate into the powerful Harte family. She is caught between her estranged parents, her new family, and her new love. But a dangerous enemy hovers in the background.
If you have read Woman of Substance or any more of the Emma Harte books by Barbara Taylor Bradford, you should read this one, too. I could not put it down; it is
a wonderful saga and all of the characters are memorable!!!
Another great book in the Emma Harte series. Even if you have not read any of the other books in the series, you will enjoy this one. It has everything it needs to stand on it's own without you feeling like you have missed something..

The new blockbuster from one of the world's greatest storytellers delves into the lives of Emma Harte--the original Woman of Substance--and the ambitious, passionate, and volatile women of the next generations. Evan, Tessa, Linnet, and India: four remarkable women. Three generations of Hartes. One indomitable family whose loyalty binds them together and whose enemies want to tear them apart.
Millions of readers will remember Emma Harte, the staunch lady introduced in Bradford's hugely successful A Woman Of Substance. We now meet her decedents, all born into wealth, all facing life altering situations.
India, much to the chagrin of her family, has fallen for an artist from not so privileged parents. Evan, another of Emma's great-granddaughters is an American who crosses the ocean to work for Harte's department store. What a shock to discover that her father was not precisely who she believed him to be.
And, there's still more woe to come: Tessa is enmeshed in a custody battle for her daughter who seems to have disappeared, and Linnet, the business woman of the group, must learn that she can't have it all.
Someone, somewhere is trying to harm all of these women. The question is who and why?
If you have read Woman of Substance, you must read this book!!! It is wonderful and contiues the Emma Harte family story! I could not put it down until I finished it, and although it is long, I read it in 3 days!!!
