An "okay" entry in the post-apocalyptic genre. The Unit refers to a family of four attempting to survive in the weeks after terrorists have attacked the US with nuclear bombs. Lots of violence but not a lot of character development here - Dad has military training so he knows how to survive, Mom is determined to keep her kids alive, teenaged girl is determinedly anti-violence and teenage boy wants to shoot things. The action covers a couple weeks at most while the family tries to elude a band of marauders. Each main character, including a couple of the bad guys, gets a few pages at a time told in first-person POV. Nice attempt and does humanize the bad guys somewhat, although it chopped up the narrative too much for my taste. Good descriptions of the effects the bombs might have. And no cannibals! You almost always get cannibals in post-apoc stories, nice not to read about it again.
Unfortunately I didn't find any of the characters to be interesting enough to follow into the promised sequel; I do wonder if the author will explore more about radiation sickness as it seemed to be little worse than a bad case of the flu in this book.
