"This is an UNMODERATED challenge. Unmoderated means that no Games Mods are supervising this challenge, and gamers are playing at their own risk. If something should happen (no prize received), the gamers will not have the assistance of the Games Moderators or the PBS Team to resolve the problem."

The challenge will require a deposit of one credit, sent to me.  The credit deposits will be used as the prize pool for winners, so you are not guaranteed to receive your credit back.  This is a reading challenge so you are not required to mail any books. Please add as a buddy to make credit returns to the winners easier.

The Challenge:

  1. We will start reading on Monday, May 20th at 12:01 am Eastern (PBS) Time and finish reading by Sunday, June 16th at 11:59 pm Eastern (PBS) Time.
  2. You must make a TBR list with at least 20 books on it. You can use Goodreads, PBS, Amazon as long as me and your buddy has access to it. This will be used to choose your buddy and secret buddy books and it will be your choice to read them or not.
  3. We will be using a form to submit our books. You can submit them all at once at the end of the week or after reading each book as long as you got all your books for the week submitted before the deadline. I will post a link to the form when the game starts. Please check your submissions thoroughly before submitting to keep down on the errors. If you submitted something in error please let me know and I will fix it.
  4. All players must check-in each week by the appropriate time. Check-in dates/times are listed below. Even if you read 0 books for the week please make a submission with your name and "blank" selected for the other options.
  5. All books read during the 28 days will accrue points. Points are covered below. Paperback and EBooks are excepted although ebooks get bonus points. Audio books, magazines, poetry, graphic novels, comics, etc, will not be allowed for this challenge. No partial books can be submitted (meaning you read 1/2 of a book).
  6. You can use Goodread, Amazon or PBS ect for page counts. For ebooks if their is a paperback version use it if not then you can use the Kindle Edition or ebook version. If you can't find a page count on any of these sites you can use the formula word count/280 to get a page count. If a book has multiple types of bindings (like hardcover and MMPB), use the MMPB version. If there isn't a MMPB version, use the trade size. If you have any question on pages feel free to PM me.

Here is the link to the Check-in Form and the Spreedsheet

CHECK-IN DATES (by 11:59 PM):

WEEK 1: MONDAY, MAY 27TH (for books read during MAY 20 - MAY 26)

WEEK 2: MONDAYJUNE 3RD (for books read during MAY 27 - JUNE 2)

WEEK 3: MONDAYJUNE 10TH (for books read during JUNE 3 - JUNE 9)

WEEK 4: MONDAY, JUNE 17TH (for books read during JUNE 10 - JUNE 16)

Point Breakdown:

Short Story - 0 to 50 pages: 25 points

Novella - 51 to 110 pages: 50 points

Novel - 111 to 250 pages: 100 points

Super Novel - 251 to 360 pages: 150 points

Super Plus Novel - 361 pages to 450 pages: 200 points

Neverending Novel - 451 pages and greater: 250 points

Bonus Points:

Secret Buddy Bonus: 75 Points - I will secretly choose 2 books from your posted TBR list and give you one clue per book. If you guess and read these books you will get bonus points

Buddy Bonus: 50 points - Before we begin, I will buddy up participants and have each pick and post 5 novella, novel, or super novel sized TBR books for their buddy to read. In addition to the regular base points, 50 bonus points will be added for each book read.

eBook Bonus: 25 points - for every ebook that is read, you will receive these bonus points. An extra incentive to get through that stash!

Review Bonus: 10 points - For every book that is reviewed, whether it's here on PBS's description page, Amazon, B&N, Goodreads, etc, you will receive 10 bonus points. These do not have to be large reviews. Why did you like the book, what did you dislike? How many stars?

Totals will be determined each week and for the final by:

Totaling up your points standing (person with the most points at the end of the week will get 1, second gets 2, etc) and adding it to your page standing (determined by totaling up number of pages read - rank again, person with most pages read will get a 1 and so on). The person with the lowest total number (both page and points added together) will be the winner. In the case of a tie for points, the ranking will be determined by the highest number of pages read. In the case of a tie for page ranking, standing will be determined by highest number of points. In the case of a total points tie, pages read will be the tie breaker. If a player has not submitting anything for the week, the will automatically get the last ranking available and tie for that spot with any other player who does not submit.

Winning Categories: You will only be allowed to win one final prize category to give everyone else more of a chance. You will also only be allowed to win one weekly prize however you can win a weekly prize and then win a final prize also.

Feel free to invite people if you think they would like to join us. I sent out a few emails to those that have been in my challenges before.

Can I make a very friendly suggestion? And please, if I'm the only one who feels this way, just ignore me. This is a problem I have had with these shorter (month-long) challenges. If I have a buddy who chooses 10 books, plus the three secret books, that's 13 books I'd have to read in order to get the bonuses, which I most definitely need in order to come anywhere close to winning one of these things. I love the idea of buddy and secret books, but those 13 books are usually my maximum output for the month. If I have other swap or trade reading I need to fit in, I don't stand a chance. So could I suggest either lengthening these challenges, or cutting back the number of buddy/secret books?

Again, if I'm the only one who is having an issue, ignore me. But on the chance that other people feel the same way and didn't want to speak up, I'll stick my neck out.

I know it's too late to change anything with this challenge, and this is defintely just a suggestion. I just thought it might give us non-speed readers a fighting chance. wink

Gina, i mostly agree with you.  along the same lines, if you only have to provide a list of 15 books and then guaranteed 13 of them are picked, then there isn't *too* much 'secret' about the secret books.  i wouldn't want to provide a longer list, but having the number of buddy books cut back doesn't sound bad to me.

not that it makes a difference whether or not i'd join a challenge - i'm still just thinking about this, since Ming's practice UF VB challenge finishes up on the 17th and i don't know if i want to drop right into another.  :)

I have no problem changing it to 5 buddy books and 2 secret books. I would lenghten the challenge but it is summer so I don't want to push it. To be honest the 10 buddy book WAS from the longer challenges so I didn't really think about it until you pointed it out.

ETA - It has been changed to 5 buddy books & 2 secret books since their is not many signed up yet.
