I read a book this weekend that I had received off my wishlist over a month ago.

I was disappointed to find that the book was unpostable.

There were food stains (yuck!) on several pages at the back and one of the "upcoming" excerpts had been torn from the back section.

I sent a PM to the PBS member had mailed me the book; I didn't really expect anything as it was my fault I hadn't inspected the book more throughly but I wanted to let her know that she might not be aware of the condition of the book and that it was unpostable.

She refunded my credit this morning - no questions asked!

I just wanted to share a bright spot in the RWAP stories.

Carol - this can happen, unfortunately.  I know I've picked up books thinking I'd post them, and upon closer inspection found they were unpostable, but as I hadn't read them wouldn't have normally seen the problem.  I've also received books that when I started reading them found them unpostable, but didn't notice the problem when I first got them.  I've never sent a PM to the sender though to let them know.  May have to do that, as I know sometimes these things can be missed if you don't read the book.  Glad things worked out for you. I know the stains make it unpostable but I never considered the upcoming ads or excerpts to be part of the text of the book.

Yeah, those pages missing are actually OK, IMO. But food stains, yuck.

The excerpts are really going to be the receivers call. This has been discussed in the TG Lounge. Many TGs felt they weren't part of the story and shouldn't matter, many felt they had text so they met the technical definition of "text pages". The Team wasn't going any where past "its a gray area". The situation that brought up the conversation was one in which the requester really DID want those excerpts from the following books (I know I read them since its like getting an extra chapter or two in the book!) In the end the sender doesn't really get to decide what the receiver might want to read so if a sender sends a book missing pages that had text on them, they do run the risk of getting the book marked as a problem. Whether to mark a book as a Problem is always the receiver's call. Its the sender's call to decide if they want an unresolved on their record or not.

I can usually tell when I read the first page of a book if I've already read it. So, I never read those excerpts .. because then if I pick up the book in the bookstore later and am trying to figure out if I've read it already or not ... it will sound really familiar but I won't be able to remember if I've read just the excerpt or the whole book. It ends up confusing me more than anything, so I stopped reading them a long time ago.

Unfortunatetly ,I used to always mark my books received before checking them, and didnt notice problems with them until I would read them. Sometimes months later. My fault.  i have learned to check first.   I never went back and asked for credit though, you got lucky there. yes

See the thing is though that I didn't even ask for the credit (I really didn't expect it either).

I thought maybe it might be someone who had been given the book and they passed it on without reading (I've done this ~ shhh don't tell my MIL wink) so I was being "neighborly" about the rules.

Thanks LIsa - I didn't mean to imply you were.  smiley

I just think it was so cool that I explained the problem and she didn't even hesitate.  Honestly I expected some kind of snarky comment given what generally seems to happen  with RWAP transactions AND given the fact that it had been over a month since I received the book.

I feel like I've had lots of bad luck lately, with several books that end up being unpostable because of a couple of words of writing or underlining in the middle of the book, where I couldn't see it when I checked the condition of the book.  I've been giving people the benefit of the doubt but am running out of patience for that because my credits are out now.

Recently, one book was received with water damage.  I marked it as damaged by PO because the cover was torn - but it wasn't wrapped inside with plastic. I meant to check the option that indicated wrapping was part of the cause of the damage, but hit enter too soon.  I asked for a credit back via pm, but never got it.
