Since I have been burned a couple of times getting books with writing in them, I have added a reminder that books should not have writing or highlighting in my RC. I recently had a request denied, with the note, "Unfortunately, this is an old book from college, so it has writing inside of it.  Apologies that we could not work this out." While I am glad that the order was canceled before the book was sent to me, because it was listed as just not agreeing with my RC, it remains in the system. Should I do anything about this?

The book was mentioned as a textbook and qualifies for that as long as the member informs the requester ahead of time and gets agreement.

What Ruth said.  Books with writing and highlighting may be posted, if the sender feels it is a textbook, cookbook, or travelbook, but he can't mail it out without PMing the requestor, describing the condition, and getting the requestor's okay.

There's a help doc called What is the definition of a textbook? that deals with this issue.

Ah, okay. I knew that exceptions existed for textbooks, but I guess I'm just wary because out of five books received so far (none traditional textbooks), two have had writing and one was covered with mildew stains. None of them mentioned anything about the condition. I'm hoping that the RC will keep some of these away, and that I've just had a string of bad luck.

I don't post required reading books for this reason. In fact, I asked about it in a previous post a long time ago, when I first joined PBS. *I* was told that novels which were required for class still counted as novels per the PBS rules, which mean that they still can't have writing or highlighting in them, even if they had, in fact, been used as a text book. I'll try to find that original post and link it here.

The rule was extended a while back to include any book that could have possibly been used in a class at some point.

Oh, really? Good, because I still have a bunch of books that I either borderline disliked or even hated, that were required for class, that I thought were unpostable. I'm gonna go find them, because I'd love to get something for those books. The bookstores .....well, I'm sure you've all heard plenty about college bookstores and their price gouging practices, lol.

Amber- just make sure to PM the person after they request it, tell them its a ex college text and what issues it has..

It does make it very hard since novels can be counted as textbooks these days..

I've received several non-texts that had been used for class at some point.  Unfortunately, most of the senders have not involked the textbook clause.  As long as the requester is fully informed of book condition, and agrees to the condition, you may post your underlined and highlighted books-used-as-texts.
