I have a few old library books I would like to post but I am not sure they are aceptable.  The dust jackets are cut at the top right (about a 2 inch square) and I cant take the dust jackets off because they are glued to the front and back cover.  They also have a black line across the pages at the top of the book.  They are all still VERY readable but I don't know if I can post them on my bookshelf.

Thanks!!!!!

Hmm.  Hardbacks don't require dust jackets and ex library books are ok. So would the black line across the top, as long as the mark didn't go into the text.  Many bookstores put a black or red mark like that when they've discounted a book.  It's the dj being glued to the book that I think would make these unpostable.  If you could just cut the dj off they could be posted. But by being glued they've pretty much ruined the cover.  Most people put unpostables in their signature line or put a post for them in the Book Bazaar.  You cannot ask credits for unpostable books. But you can offer them as a free book with an order from your shelf or as just a free book.

Hi - Well, you can post a hardback book without a dust jacket, so I would think that a dust jacket that's been cut is just fine.  Also, the black mark is okay - a lot of ex-library books have those!

Dustjackets are not required, so the condition of them should be a non-issue. The black mark on the top of the pages sounds something like a remainder mark, which is OK too. Sounds postable to me. To avoid someone marking them as RWP in error, you could e-mail them once the book is accepted.

But doesn't the dust jacket being glued to the cover, damage the cover?  Especially if the dust jacket is damaged?  If you post them, make sure you PM first.  I would not be happy if the DJ was damaged and unremoveable.  If it were just the dust jacket then I would say they're ok. You can just toss the dj.  But they are glued to the cover.

I would say the glued dust jacket renders this book unpostable.

I see what you are saying, but I think that this is over-thinking it a bit.  I say the books are postable.

I see nowhere in the posting conditions that state dust jackets glued on make a book unpostable. I myself would PM the person letting them know but damaged dust jackets do not make a book unpostable and I can find nothing stating that being glued to the book changes that. The person receiving the book can always take GoGone or something to the book if they are offended by it.

But doesn't the dust jacket being glued to the cover, damage the cover,

As I understand the guidelines, a "damaged" cover is still postable so long as there is not a tear in the cover larger than 1/2".

Still, it's somewhat offputting, so a PM would seem to be a good idea here.

I think this is refering to paperbacks...not a dust jacket.  I'd say it's postable!  Wouldn't bother me at all to get a book like that.

Most ex-library books have their DJs glued or totally taped on. If that were a problem it would be specifically noted under the ex-library book section, since it is so common. There is no problem with them being glued on.

If people are concerned about what the library does to a book prior to releasing it, such as cuttion off the electronic trigger mechanism, or securing the cover to the book, they need to put this information in the RCs.

Yep, this is not unusual at all for an ex-library book.  :)  I'd call it postable for sure.
