I have a book I'd like to post, and while its in excellent condition, it has a number written in sharpie along the side of the pages, as it used to be a school-issued book. Is that alright, or should I not post it?

Are you talking about a number marked across the fore edges - like a remainder mark?

Yes, it's postable.  Writing on text pages is not ok, but this is from the Help center:

Page edges: remainder marks are OK.  A name written on the page edges is okay (if it does not bleed in and obscure text on the text pages)

Personally, I think it's probably fine.  As long as it's not on any text pages, and it's just across the fore edge, it should be.  This is usually where remainder marks, UBS & library stamps are, and these are considered acceptable.  I'd get a few more opinions on it, but I would think it's postable.

Well there ya go.  It's fine.  I don't remember seeing that in the help docs, but I'd say that addresses it.
