  Where do you exist
exactly
Are you there
in the head
dangling from the cerebellum
like a moth
Are you there
in the body
that ancient temple
sophisticated vine
shining suspension bridge
to the crude forms of fulfillment
to the subtle heat
the kindling chakra
Is that where you resist
the knowledge?
How the blood floods the veins
nourishes the heart
how organs react
to love and cold
to the finch's distress
in the manzanita tree
How you experience
art
callousness
ecstatic communion
in the bones
between your ribs
sarcasm
a tickle in the femur
Do you know the joy
of healing with the hands
pliant wrists like roots
dancing
on a canvas
over snow
behind the eye
a neverending parade inside your bicameral brain
Muscles
tools of the intellect
not slaves
but sieves
a mind of their own
a sense of humor
a livelihood
What do you hope for
dream of
retaining
breathing in
believing in
If you do not inhale
first with your heart
that soup bowl of immortality
