One night, as he cried to God in prayer about his pain and hunger, God told Lester to run. Crawling out his upstairs window onto the porch roof, he slid down a post, and ran until he came to a woods. There he hid and lived alone for four months. The only food he could find to eat was raw potatoes. When they were harvested, he found a field of turnips, which he also ate uncooked.
He woke up on Thanksgiving morning to find a light coating of snow covering his summer-clad cold body and bare feet. Again he asked God what he should do, and again he was sure God told him to run. Before noon he ran 20 miles in the snow, but because he couldn't remember much of the morning, he always felt God had carried him most of the way.
When he was 89 years old, Lester told this story of his long and sometimes sorrowful life. He always tried to be the faithful servant of God who helped others in need.« less
