British publisher Gibson Square Books has picked the publication rights to this novel. It'll be interesting to see if any of Random House's fears come to fruition.

This is great news! I'm very happy for Sherry Jones. :-)

I definitely would never want to see anyone get hurt over this, but, you're right,  it will be very interesting to see if RH made the right decision. I imagine they'll be kicking themselves if nothing happens and the book makes a ton of money.  We'll just have to wait and see what happens at this point. ;-)

I think the sales are likely to be high - at least at first and as long as there aren't any high-profile negative reviews. The pre-publication publicity has to count for something.

She has an American publisher now. They're planning to release in October. That's pretty fast! Maybe we should consider this for a Book of the Month??? Think of all the possibilities for discussion!

Some new developments- It sounds as if the British publisher may be rethinking the decision to publish this book after having their office bombed.

Here is the first review of The Jewl of Medina that I've seen - http://www.smartbitchestrashybooks.com/index.php/weblog/comments/the-jewel-of-medina-by-sherry-jones/

The review was not favorable.  A good bit of the criticism stems from the latter half, the most important part, of Aisha's life not being explored, but the latter half of her life is going to be covered in the second book. It also sounds as if Aisha didn't sound like a woman of her times. Not good, but I'll be reading it anyway because I just have to see for myself.

If you have this book on your wishlist, make sure you don't have the old ISBN from Ballantine. The new ISBN is 0825305187.

Hmm. I wonder if there hadn't been so much publicity over RH's decision to pull out if the UK publisher would have been targeted. It's a which-came-first-the-chicken-or-the-egg question.

I'm not surprised the reviews are bad. Reading the first chapter was enough to put me off. I think she needs time to develop as a fiction writer.

I don't think this book would have ever made a blip on anyone's radar if RK hadn't pulled out. Salman Rushdie, she is not! ;-)
