From Amazon:

There are more than enough feisty women on this side of the Atlantic to fill an entire book, decided Vicki Le¢n (Uppity Women of the Renaissance, etc.), so she did. The result is Uppity Women of the New World, a hilarious yet sobering glance at 200 women in North and South America and Australia who took their destinies into their own hands. Some are famous, but most are not, like enterprising Mary Salmon, who in 1754 wasted no time picking up where her late husband left off as a Boston blacksmith and continued, as advertised, to shod gentlemen's horses "with fidelity and dispatch." 5-city author tour.

"Uppity Women" are nothing more than STRONG WOMEN. Too bad that they're characterized as "uppity," but anyway...

This is a cool collection of blurbs (most are 2 pages) about STRONG WOMEN of North and South America in the 1600s (give or take a few decades), including some famous ones (like Pocahontas) and some not-so-famous ones. This book is great reading for girls so they can see that you can be STRONG without being afraid of it. I like to think of these as the ultimate girl power books (there are many in the series), showing how women can take on men's roles or just act differently than society says they should act. In this day and age, when girls are sometimes less-than-confident members of our world, having a book like this could really inspire them to greatness.

Not to say this is a "girl's book." Far from it. It's history, sociology, humor, anthropology, and feminism all in one, which makes it perfect for boys, girls, women, men, dogs, goldfish...whoever!

Leon continues her light-hearted approach to quicky biographical sketches (most 100-200 words) of women of distinction and disrepute, this time concentrating on North and South America and Australia.

I love these "Uppity Women" books. There is such interesting information in these but this is the only one I have in paperback.
