Louis L'Amour remains the best western writer Ive ever read.
This version of Utah Blaine is the leatherette(imitation leather but very nice)edition.
The story is one of my favorites of his:
Utah Blaine is sleeping surrounded by bushes. He is woken by a lynch mob that leaves their victim hanging.
Blaine cuts him down and it turns out it is an old man who owns the biggest and best ranch in the county. The lynchers figured with him out of the way they could sell off his cattle and claim the land.
But Utah and the old man find a lawyer and Utah is given full legal permission to take care of the ranch and pay all bills; whatever has to be done. In return ,
if Utah is successful holding the ranch he will get enough acres to start his own ranch.
So here is one man, Utah Blaine, good with a gun and with a decent set of morals riding into a hornets nest. For in this town , almost EVERYONE is out for a piece of the pie they perceive the old man's ranch to be. And most are ready to kill for it.
This story has a lot more action, gunfights and fisticuffs than most of Mr. L'Amours stories. I couldn't put it down and I figure to read it again someday in the future.

Range War. Utah Blaine had escaped from a Mexican prison and was headed north on foot when he came upon a hanging. The man in the noose was a tough old Texas rancher; the executioners were his own men turned against him, and Blaine stepped out of the shadows just in time to save a life. Now Blaine has a proposition: He'll ride to the rancher's land, take over as foreman of his outfit, and take on his enemies. Blaine is no stranger to fighting in another man's war, but soon enough he'll find a reason of his own: a cause worth dying for, and a woman worth living for...
