I am going to be moving at the end of the month.  Based on your experience, how far in advance should I put my account on vacation hold?

I would stay on the safe side and do it NOW. I would also make sure the post office will be forwarding my mail to my new address just in case. I would release the hold a week after you move in. (we had many late letters getting to us that week). I'd also try my best to meet the mail carrier, introduce myself and ask if the current mail box works well.. ( when we moved in we asked and our mail carrier said no, we should get one that locks. So we bought a new one with a large slot and big box, plus a semi flat top. Most of my books can fit in and drop down so no one can see I have a PBS package.)

Good suggestions.  Do you also think I should take care of the address change with the post office now?  Can that be done online these days, or is it still a form you fill out and mail in?

Sooner rather than later Whitney,  PBS guidelines recommend at least two weeks.  They also suggest you not have any books on auto-request.

Posted in the USPS forum today, a member moved the end of July and one of her final incoming books is still enroute from Alaska...and of course taking it's time.  USPS should forward the book postage paid, but not all branches seem to read their memos.

Ask at the Post Office when the best time to put in your official change of address.  I'd think you'd do that pretty close to your move date so you don't miss any bills.  You don't want mail going to your new address before you are there.

Xengab, do you have a picture of this type of mailbox?  I have an NBU but often am asked about locking mailboxes.

Whitney,

You can do your change of address online and set it to start on a specific date.  Good luck with the move!

I've moved 3 times since I joined PBS. I put my account on hold 2 months before each time.

Mary, I have to admire your self-control.  All I can think is:  "but I might miss out on a book I want!".
