Is there a way to put My Bookshelf on hold, but not my Wish List?

You can put your account on hold and make sure your wishlist items are set to auto-request.  That way, any wishlist books that might be offered to you will automatically be accepted while your account is on hold.

Folks will not be able to post books directly to you.  (Gold Key friends will be able to do so, through their pull down menu options.)

But I highly recommend AGAINST using the individual hold for books on your bookshelf.  This puts your books back at the end of the FIFO line.  Definite whoops.   Please only use the Hold for books on your Wish List.  (They do not lose their place in line.)  Or Vacation Hold.

Here's my quandary: I will be having surgery in the next month (or so), and I know that I will have a very low lifting (weight) limit for at least the first couple of months. Unfortunately, this will make it difficult for me to handle outgoing book requests. Due to space limitations, I really have no other option for storing my Book Shelf books except stacked boxes in a corner of my home office. While I could impose on my wife for lifting help, she has back issues and will will not be home for a large portion of my convalescence period. OTOH, my weight limitations would have no bearing on accepting offers from off of my Wish List.

This would also lose your place in the FIFO line, but my first thought was to export the ISBNs for later and delete everything on your bookshelf. You could add it back later once you are done convalescening, and would let you order and receive books in the meantime no problem.

It occurs to me that this might not be a bad idea to suggest to the PBS team; maybe other people would like the ability to hold their bookshelf only, without going on vacation hold.

Good luck with your surgery.

I think Hunter's solution is the best one.  Put account on vacation hold with wishlist books you want on auto-request.  As long as you have adequate credits, you'll still continue to receive those books.  You can monitor your account and change which WL books you have on auto-request while your account is on vacation hold.

Best wishes for a successful surgery!

I agree -- go to your bookshelf and place your account on Vacation Hold using the blue link in the bar at the top.  This means you won't get any requests, but you keep your spot in the sending line for each book.  Then go to your wish list, and place some or all books there on "auto request."  Auto-request bypasses the vacation hold.

I hadn't realized this.  Then again, the only books I put on hold are those which have no FIFO line.

"You can put your account on hold and make sure your wishlist items are set to auto-request."

My surgery is now scheduled for next Friday, so I need to take care of this in the next few days. I have one more question about how Auto-Request works... If there are two versions of the same book on My Bookshelf and I am offered one of them, which is auto-requested, is the other version automatically placed on Hold by the system?

Normally yes, the other versions are put on hold. But every once in a while the different versions aren't linked in the system.

If you have two versions of a WL book on Auto Request, and one is offered, and the other put on hold, you can always 'unhold' it yourself.  When I use the Vacation Hold and have two versions on my WL, I will usually Auto Request the one where I'm closest to the front of the line and not worry about the other one.  Good luck on your surgery.  Pat

Put your wish list books on auto BEFORE putting your shelf on hold.

I learned that lesson the hard way.

My books that were put on AUTO after placing my shelf on hold did NOT show up until after I took the shelf off hold.

Hope that makes some kind of sense.

Yes, it makes perfect sense. And, If you read the Help docs it's somewhat logical.

"Best wishes for a successful surgery!"

"Good luck with your surgery."

"Just popping in to wish you a successful surgery and a speedy recovery!"

Thanks, all... Oddly enough, I think I was less apprehensive about it when I had the same procedure done on my left side 40 years ago than I am now. At least I know that I won't have to worry about PBS.

I placed my entire Wishlist on Auto-Request and then put my account on Vacation Hold on August 6th. Although I cannot be sure, I don't think that this has worked as recommended. Since putting my account on hold, I have not had a single book offered and auto-requested. While I realize that there's really no way to be sure, but it is EXTREMELY unusual for me to go almost three weeks without a single book coming off of my Wishlist. (I am #1 on more than 50 books and #2 on another 36.) Although I still have a few more days before the doctor says that I can lift the lighter boxes, I'm going to take my account off of Vacation Hold and see what happens.

BTW, my surgery went well and my recovery has progressed at a reasonable albeit slower than expected pace. Thanks to all who posted or PM'ed get well wishes!

Welcome back!  I hope your recovery continues to go well.

I'm glad you asked for advice on this topic because I have needed it already.  It worked for me in July.

I'm curious.  When you look through your wishlist now, does it say that any books were posted during the hold time in August?  I'm just wondering about whether there was a problem or just a coincidence of timing.

"I hope your recovery continues to go well."

Thank you. I'm still a way's away from being 100%, but every day is better than the day before. yes

"It worked for me in July."

I'm not sure whether it worked or not. As I said, it's a bit unusual for me to go so long without being offered a book off of my Wish List. Coincidentally (?), the very instant that I took my account off hold, I had two Bookshelf requests and within a couple of hours, I had a Wish List offer. As to whether any books were posted during the hold time in August, the answer is yes. Unfortunately, I didn't think to take a snapshot of my account before I put it on hold. sad

You may not be the only one who had a problem with this recently.  Just yesterday a new thread was started about it called "Auto request WL while on vacation hold".
