In some ways I liked this book better than its predecessor, Tropic of Night. The development of the continuing character, and his many family-friends-work relationships continued nicely. The plot here required less suspension of disbelief, but the ending wasn't as satisfying as in the first book. The story just sorta stopped -- some loose ends were tied up quickly, but it still felt unfinished. I'm eager to read the third book, now winging its way to my mailbox.

With the sections of the book in italics, and the constant use of foreign terms, etc., it was not an easy book to read. Certainly made you work hard to follow things. And it tries to make a believer out of you. But I did like the main character (Jimmy Paz) and I read all 3 books in the series. So it couldn't have been that bad. ;)

Miami Detective Jimmy Paz returns for another mystery written by the author of the bestseller Tropic of Night. Not as good as the first, but a must for Paz fans.

A miracle of intelligent fiction, and among the essential novels of recent years.
Mesmerizing don't miss this book.
Hair-raising.
