I love this kind of story! Had a similar feel to The Black Lyon, which I believe is the first one in the Montgomery series since Ranulf and Lyonene named their child Montgomery, but they must have been way before this time. The only thing mentioned was the Montgomery's had been around for hundreds of years.

The Velvet Promise is about the Montgomery brothers, 4 in total, and I can see from the way they were characterized I will want to read all of their stories. Gavin the oldest Montgomery, he feels he is in love with the manipulative Alice, daughter of a poor drunken baron. She wants to marry for money, which the Montgomery's are lacking due to some past political turmoil, so she strings along Gavin for the good hard sex and marries an abusive Earl for his lands and riches. Gavin then marries Judith a wealthy heiress who he thinks is going to be hideous, but once he sees her he is awestruck by her beauty. Judith is pleasantly surprised by her handsome groom as well. Alice is green with envy and plots and destroys over and over to ruin Gavin and Judith happiness. Lots of deceit and jealousy throughout the book with many cruel villains and lots of conflicts to overcome. I loved both the H and h, their chemistry was sizzling, they couldn't get enough of each other even when they hated one another. There was also several secondary romances throughout the book that were a positive bonus. Already started Highland Velvet- great so far!

Historical Romance- This is a Montgomery book. At the flower-bedecked altar, the first touch of their hands ignited an all consuming passion. Gavin Montgomery looked deep into her golden eyes and burned with desire for her...but his heart had been pledged to another. Humiliated and alone in a strange castle, Judith resolved to hate this husband who took her body, but rejected her love...never admitting her fear of losing him. But destiny held another fate for Judith...a fate that would keep at last. I enjoyed this book..but then I love everything written by this author.

It is well written, but being beaten and raped isn't my idea of a romantic wedding night, nor an enticing way to start a story. When the supposedly strong willed heroine turns around and welcomes him, it just doesn't feel believable. I didn't even make it to 100 pages before I tossed the book. This was my first Jude Deveraux book, I'm sad to have to add such a prolific and popular author to my "rape/beating" blacklist.

Gavin had given his heart to the beauty of Alice Valence. But his vows he made to Judith. His first sight of Judith on their wedding day rocked him to his very soul. At the flower vedecked altar, the first touch of their hands ignited an all-consuming passion. Gavin looked deep into her golden eyes, stroked her rich Auburn hair, and burned with desire for her...but his heart had been pledged to another. Judith was mesmerized by this God that she had married. Her heart beat rapidly and she tingled with excitement of what could be. Then he had turned his eyes on another and the look he gave this one fired Judith's blood to boiling. She retreated to the garden for privacy, and hidden from vue she was present when her Gavin pronouned to his Alice that he could never love another.
Judith resolved to hat this husband who took her body but rejected her love. Destiny held sway over Judith's fate and a Love that would test Gavin and Judith.
